If you've been on the edge of your digital seat waiting for the impending arrival of the new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), you'll be happy to know the wait is over (kind of).

1&1 Internet, a hosting provider and domain registrar, has announced that the first seven new gTLDs were made available yesterday for general availability to the public. Part of the appeal of these new gTLDs, according to Kelly Meeneghan, a manager for 1&1, is that now professionals can register a more unique and ideal domain name that better communicates the context of the website.

These newly released domain extensions include:

- .bike

- .singles

- .holdings

- .clothing

- .ventures

- .plumbing

- .guru.

"These unique options allow businesses to not only create a great, memorable online address, but also better secure their online brand while gaining a competitive edge," said Meeneghan. "It is beneficial for businesses with existing .com domains to also consider the name with one of the new gTLDs. Building upon a domain portfolio can protect against the increasing misuse of brand names on the World Wide Web."

Meeneghan continues that "including the registration of a new gTLD into a business strategy holds potential for capturing traffic and developing their digital branding."

It should be noted that 1&1 is now offering the first seven gTLDs for registration via Hundreds of more new generic top-level domains will be released over the course of 2014 and beyond.
