There's an immense amount of activity in the domain name industry at the moment as new top-level domains are introduced. That can make it hard to keep up (and even harder to ensure you make the right decisions), so Website Magazine has put together a list of highlights from the past month that will surely influence how you brand your digital enterprise (and assets) in the future.
+ Top Level Spectrum has submitted a request to ICANN to combine a feedback platform with its upcoming .feedback top-level domain name (similar to the way that .TEL works now). Top Level Spectrum, which has contracted with a commercial feedback service, indicated that the system was "ready for use when approved".
+ Speaking of the new gTLD's, while some expect existing extensions like .COM to benefit from the introduction of the new options, others won't be as lucky - including .BIZ. RegistrarStats reports that total .BIZ domains experienced a dramatic drop this year as the new gTLDs were released. Will other extensions suffer the same fate? (We're looking at you .NET).
+ Verisign reported its 3rd quarter earnings last week and revealed that the registration base for .com and .net increased by 1.15 million domain names to a total of 130.0 million. The .COM extension is responsible for most of that activity as .NET seems to be leveling off.
+ Namestat.org revealed that the .CLUB extension (which Website Magazine last year suggested would be one of the big winners in the gTLD explosion of 2014) has more sites in the Alexa Top Million than any other new domain extension. The .CLUB extension also has more than 10x the usage of the average new gTLD (and twice as much as .XYZ which has nearly 5 times the number of registrations (600,000 versus 120,000).
+ Flippa, one of the big names in the domain name/website auction space, recently posted some interesting information on the niches with the highest chances of selling and those which recevied the highest prices. According to Flippa's Stephen Koo, "Health and Beauty" is tied with "Home and Garden" for the niche with the highest sell rate, and "Design and Style" and "Automative" are the niches that have the highest median sales value.
