The U.S. Online Advertising Report from online advertising platform provider Marin Software reveals that during Q4 of 2011, 4 percent of clicks on paid search ads in the U.S. were made on a tablet, with 6 percent being made on a smartphone. Additionally, the ads that were served on tablets had a 37 percent higher click through rate (CTR) than ads on desktops, while smartphones had a 31 percent higher CTR.

“In Q4 2011, we saw paid search marketers allocate a larger portion of budgets to mobile devices than ever before," says Matt Lawson, Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships at Marin Software. "Given the favorable performance characteristics of mobile advertising today, we expect this trend to continue as advertising dollars begin to chase consumer behavior."

Other statistics from the report also show that across the top three search engines – Google, Yahoo and Bing – paid search spending increased by 35 percent, click volume increased by 56 percent, CTR increased by 23 percent and cost per click (CPC) decreased 14 percent during Q4 of 2011, compared to last year at the same time.

AdMarvel is providing software developer kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs) to developers for Android and BlackBerry operating systems.

Most interesting is that the platform offers developers and publishers the ability to source and serve their own advertising, including house ads, to cross-promote and cross-sell their applications. Advertising campaigns from leading U.S. ad networks (including Go2 Media, Greystripe, InMobi, Jumptap, Mobile Theory, Mojiva, and Where) have been integrated into the solution and are ready for deployment.

“We are very pleased to launch this solution for VDC developers and look forward to helping them monetize their new VCAST applications,” said Mahi de Silva, CEO of AdMarvel. “Our focus is on helping developers to easily incorporate advertising into their applications and provide them with sophisticated tools to help them analyze and optimize their bottom line. We are most excited about delivering an open and extensible platform which provides a scalable growth path as usage and volume expands.”

While that growth is in part due to the explosive growth of the mobile industry itself, HipCricket has positioned itself well and its customers are returning - 50% of its ads campaigns come from repeat business.

The company's solutions are currently used in more than 15 industries with a particular focus in quick service restaurants (QSR), consumer packaged goods (CPG), retail, travel, and technology). Offerings a suite of mobile marketing and advertising channels, 55% of HipCricket clients have delivered ads via SMS and 45% via display through mobile websites and mobile application banners. Big names including Macy’s, Nestle, KFC, HBO and Clear Channel have turned to HipCricket.

Worldwide mobile voice and data revenue will exceed one trillion dollars a year by 2014, according to Gartner, Inc. Primary revenue drivers will develop from additional services such as as context, advertising, application and service sales.

“We see three major eras of mobility,” said Nick Jones, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “The device era was characterized by iconic devices such as the Motorola RAZR and was dominated by device manufacturers. This was followed by the application era which arrived with the iPhone, popularizing application and media stores. Going forward, the service and social era will build on the application era, but it will be characterized by cloud services and streaming media. Applications will survive, but often as a component of a more complex end-to-end experience involving the cloud.”

Gartner suggests that many new device types such as tablets and e-book readers will emerge through 2012 and some will find a role in corporations. However, none will achieve a market share comparable to smartphones or laptops, which will remain the dominant corporate mobile devices. Mobile knowledge workers will require both a PC and a smartphone through 2014.
