Popular social networking site Facebook, previously limited to high school and college students and other limited groups will soon go public. Current membership is about 10 million users, but that number will surely explode, perhaps drawing from MySpace's list of 109 million users.
One of the major differences between Facebook and MySpace is the accessibility to user data. MySpace users can view just about any available information about other users by simply visiting their page (as long as it's open to public viewing), while Facebook users seem much more concerned about privacy. Users recently spoke up when Facebook started a feature that allowed users to track their friends' changes to their pages - including lists of friends, photos and other personal details. Facebook has since given users to turn off that option.
Facebook will open their doors for users to join specific networks - by country, state metropolitan area or city. It's big news for advertisers, as a whole new crop of potential customers will come into play. What's more, Facebook offers local advertising - starting at about $5 per 2,500 impressions.
