Hitwise, an online competitive intelligence service, announced on Wednesday that one in 20 U.S. Internet visits went to social-networking websites in September - nearly double the share of visits compared with a year ago.

MySpace was the overwhelming leader of social networking sites with an 81.92% market share. Facebook (7.24%), Xanga (1.86%), Yahoo! 360 (1.21%) and BlackPlanet.com (1.12%) rounded out the top five. More interesting to me was the average session time. MySpace users averaged over 30 minutes, but GaiaOnline.com users averaged 47 minutes per session. Which really goes to show that perceived popularity does not neccesarily correlate to enhanced user experience or the robustness of a community.
