There are many factors to consider when analyzing your Web page load times (amount of traffic, page size, development language even applications running behind the scenes) but many are out of the control of website owners and even designers. For the real answer, sometimes it's necessary to look right at the Web hosting provider as to why your site is loading so darn slow!
RealMetrics released a RealMetrics WebSpeed Report in November which revealed that shared Hosting was 80% faster than VPS hosting. Before you run off and dump your VPS hosting provider though, the report discusses the reasons behind this significant speed variance and the risks associated with basing a hosting decision on speed alone.
In short, shared hosting and VPS hosting are really intended for two entirely different audiences. Shared is much simpler to set up and requires almost no technical skills. A VPS account, however, can require significant technical expertise to set up and manage. Selecting a VPS account will allow you to install almost any software, compared to a shared account which allows you to add only software preconfigured by the hosting provider. While shared hosting may be faster than VPS hosting, Rick Ralston, CEO and Founder of Real Metrics agreed today during a phone call that in itself, speed should not control a decision making process. "There are many factors to consider when selecting a hosting provider which include: uptime, Web speed, support response time, price and the feature set," said Ralston.
