The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and its Lead Generation Comitee today released the Lead Generation Data Transfer Best Practices. The organization developed the document to educate marketers and advertisers who purchase lead generation services and companies providing those services to advertisers on security and operational best practices.
The IAB is reccomending that best efforts be made to transfer data in real time with encyrption equal to or greater than 128-bit SSL encrytpion. If this is not possible, then batch data must be transferred via secure FTP because it is the most practical of commercially available, cost effective, encrypted data transfer methods. The IAB also puts forth quite a few reccomendations or naming conventions, data formatting, response communications and error handling, as well as some best practices for common. If you're engaged in lead generation on either the purchase or sale side, it's a good document to have handy in your toolbox.
According to the press release: "We applaud the IAB Lead Generation Committee for proactively creating these best practices that improve both operational effectiveness and security for the transfer of consumer data," said Sheryl Draizen, SVP and General Manager of the IAB. "As the Lead Generation segment of interactive advertising continues to grow, the industry is committed to protecting consumer's privacy, while delivering new, innovative services that improve the effectiveness of advertisers' marketing strategies."
