What's so special about phpBB 3.0? I'll tell you. Olympus, version 3.0 of the popular open source forum software phpBB has a host of new features (in addition to the many improvements on 2.0) that are worthy of note. One of the issues I've heard about previous versions is that there is no site wide RSS support and it's not in this version either, but here are some of the most significant improvements and advancements:

  • Include attachments in posts and private messages.
  • Display automatic image thumbnails.
  • Create unlimited sub forums.
  • Display active topics of all sub forums.
  • Create your own BBCodes
  • Add new fields on user profiles; display at registration and profile view
  • Moderation queue, topic merging and topic copying
  • Add other members as friends or foes
    • posts by foes are hidden
    • friends are show in friends list
  • Ability to bookmark topics
  • Subscribe to forums
  • Mail or print topics
  • and a whole lot more.
