Most website owners do not regularly check the links that are featured on
their website. Whether internal links or outbound links, it's an important part
of routine site maintenance and one that should not be overlooked. For affiliate
marketers however (those that sell the products or services of others) it is
even more important as their income relies on users being able to visit the
sites being promoted and make purchases.
Companies that offer affiliate programs routinely expire certain offerings,
terminate special promotions or entire affiliate relationships, go out of stock
on a product, or experience problems with their websites without notifying their
affiliates. They either redirect the affiliate links to the company home page,
or to another page that doesn't convert for the affiliate.
So what's the solution? If you're only utilizing a few affiliate programs,
manually testing links will be the way to go. But if you've got hundreds of
affiliate campaigns running, then software is the way to go. Affiliate Link
Checker is one such software solution that tests affiliate links on a daily basis.
If the destination web site (that of the merchant for example) is
unreachable, Affiliate Link Checker sent an alert to the affiliate. The service
also sends an alert when the landing page is different from the one where the
affiliate expects the link to take visitors, or when certain phrases (such as
"out-of-stock") appear on the landing page or don't appear on the landing page
(called negative matching). An example of negative matching might include
changing the price on a product which means a lower commission payout.
Website Magazine has not tested this software. The service provides access on a monthly subscription basis with volume
discounts for large affiliates with thousands of affiliate links. Perhaps something to consider.
