Google Chrome Market Share

Analytics service Get Clicky is tracking the global market share of Chrome, Google's new browser. As of September 3rd, 2008 at 7:45 PST, the market share was 2.72052% among the services 45,000 websites GetClick monitors. Expect that number to fluctuate over the coming days and weeks. Chrome currently only works on Vista and XP, but as additional operating systems come on board, it will be increasingly important to test your site design in the Chrom browser.

We'll have to see what sort of positive or negative buzz grows around the Chrome browser. Some people might consider it a step forward. Others might consider it to be an unwelcome competitor to their browser of choice.

Firefox is currently my browser of choice, and I don't want Chrome to obliterate that choice. So, yes, market share is interesting -- thanks, guys, for that big scorecard. More interesting is what Chrome can do for us. Our friend at the Chicago Tribune, tech reporter Eric Benderoff, says Chrome gets us closer to computing in the clouds. Before we get there, how many people are having problems downloading Chrome?

The Chrome browser usage of Website Magazine is currently 6.5% for the past two days -  I expect that number will decrease slightly as users go back to their more familiar browsers. IE8 and Firefox 3 are formidable opponents - Chrome has it's work cut out for it.

I see it is just one more browser to test all my sites on...  I installed it yesterday and browsing was much slower than IE or Firefox...  Most are saying the reverse.

I didn't notice any change in browsing speed either. I remember when I first tested Firefox - I had the same opinion that it was so much faster. Definitely the right thing to test now and on an ongoing basis.

Do we really need to test on chrome? If we have tested on other browsers using Webkit for rendering aren't we good to go?
