Yahoo! has announced the ability for publishers to create enhanced listings to stand out among search results using SearchMonkey. The enhancements can include video, games and documents and are included after adding a few lines of code. After including enhancements, Yahoo! will crawl your page again, and your new results will be displayed to the searcher.
From the Yahoo! Search Blog: "The premise is simple: if you have a flash video,
game, or document (like a presentation or spreadsheet) embedded on a page,
adding a few lines of code will make it appear as an enhanced result after we
recrawl your page. Very little semantic markup knowledge is required, and you
don’t have to build your own application. SearchMonkey does the heavy lifting,
taking your markup and extracting the necessary structured data to display it as
an enhanced result."
This is an excellent opportunity for publishers to get a premium listing while still in the early stages. It will be interesting to see how users respond to a mixed results search environment. The enhanced results already support video players from Hulu, YouTube and MetaCafe - yet another reason to get some video included on your website.
