Google today launched what ultimately could be the most serious threat to PayPal yet.

The Google Checkout Store Gadget, a product of Google Labs, enables the creation of an online store that's powered by Google Checkout. What eBay company PayPal did so well (which arguably changed the face of the commercial Web for millions) is simply the process of accepting payments. When a company with a trustworthy brand like Google comes into the market with a solution like this one, it once again changes the game. Why? The best part of the gadget is that inventory is managed in a Google Docs spreadsheet.

Merchants will need to have a Google Checkout seller account in order to process orders but the actual development side of this is a breeze. Just create a copy of Google's template spreadsheet and then replace the sample inventory with your own. Then embed the gadget on your website and you're on your way to e-commerce riches.

Google Store Gadget might not necessarily succeed. PayPal has somehow managed to fend off competitors, not to mention wave after wave of spoof emails. Bad press or scandals could change everything.

This isn't surprising. With the release of their own operating systems due to hit the market soon with their bare-bones web browser (Chrome) it seems only natural that the giant Google will attempt to dominate every part of the online market.

Wouldn't it be something if this company turned out to be what we all feared Microsoft would be? A monopolizer of the WWW.

Google is pulling a Microsoft by spreading themselves thin. It's really, to me, making the brand kind of generic.
