Affiliate Benchmarks; Dark Days for Newbie Affiliates

NETexponent's research division AffiliateBenchmarks released its annual report on the affiliate industry today and if you're new to the affiliate marketing industry it looks like you're not living up to your true potential.

The survey revealed that while many newcomers are getting into the game on the side hoping to make supplemental income, nearly half of the survey respondents reported that less than five percent or none of their links generated a sale in the month before completing the survey. It's important to note however that nearly half (49 percent) of survey respondents joined the industry in the past two years, and over half consider affiliate advertising to be a part-time job or hobby.

Perhaps the most interesting insight from the report is that many affiliates are overlooking or are unaware of technolies and strategies that are driving success and revenue for more experienced affiliates. For example, although there is a clear correlation between the reported number of keywords purchased and the reported monthly revenue of the affiliate, only 36 percent of survey respondents utilize PPC search. And it doesn't stop with PPC:

- The use of flash ads and video widgets performed excellent or well for those who claimed to employ these tactics, however, the large majority of survey respondents did not leverage these formats.

- Nearly 40 percent (38.5 percent) of survey respondents do not read any blogs for up-to-date information and helpful tips.

- Nearly half (46.9 percent) of survey respondents do not collect data on their websites' audiences; 14.4 percent of those did not even know where this information comes from.

The affiliate marketing industry is moving beyond hobbyists. That doesn't mean there aren't exceptional opportunities for committed individuals to succeed.

I think it all boils down to the fact that the learning curve is steep, and if not strong and determined one can easily get put off and quit.

Whilst many jump on with the hope of making money quickly and easily, you find they are a lot of things to put together that they are not prepared to put up with the learning and application of the technologies and strategies that are driving the success and revenue for the more experienced.

There are so many widgets and applications in use today, and with technology evloving at the rate at which it is, not many will cope with that.

To those who try to persevere, they either are reluctant to pay for effective coaching programs or simply have financial constraints to implement systems that work. Paying for PPC and Kyeword research can be costly and it's not the best for someone looking to make some extra cash fast.

People need to understand these things first, but unfortaunately it takes a good while to get the hang of things in this game.

However this to me is an indication that with determination and willingness to learn, this industry will never be saturated, which is good news.

I've been an affiliate for quite a while now and yes it's very true I do get a bit cheesed off with a the extra time taken to promote my affiliate business on a part time basis while running a full time business otherwise.

My affiliate business is fantastic and a lot of fun and I look forward to the time when I've secured  a sufficient income from it to enable me to replace my major business within the next couple of years.
