jQuery Mobile Arrives; Develop Once, Deploy Everywhere

The alpha release of jQuery Mobile went live over the weekend.

The project is a user interface framework for mobile devices built on top of jQuery, the most popular JavaScript library used today. With jQuery Mobile, developers can write applications once and depoly them for a number of mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets.

There are two guiding principles of the jQuery Mobile project that differentiates it from most other offerings: It’s completely built on the principle of progressive enhancement (taking a fully functional HTML web page, layering on additional JavaScript functionality, and giving capable browsers a top-of-the-line experience) and is designed to be functional in all HTML-capable mobile browsers.

The current alpha version of jQuery Mobile supports iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), Android, Blackberry OS6, HP's webOS, Mozilla's Fennec and Opera Mobile. In the future, other platforms will be added including Windows Mobile, Symbian, MeeGo and more. The goal of jQuery Mobile is to aid in the devleopment of sites for the mobile Web.

This is actually huge, especially with all the mobile OS support.
