E-readers are Rewriting Retailers’ Bestseller Lists

While many in the traditional publishing industry couldn’t wait to close the books on 2010, the makers of the leading e-book readers were trumpeting their record-setting year-end sales of the devices.

Earlier this week, Amazon announced that its third-generation Kindle is now the best-selling item in the company’s history after recently overtaking the "Deathly Hallows" seventh book in the Harry Potter series. Not to be outdone, Barnes and Noble announced on Thursday that its e-reader, the Nook, now qualifies as B&N’s all-time bestseller.

The Nook Color, introduced in October, was Barnes and Noble’s leading holiday seller, the company said. The statement released also included the news that Barnes and Noble now sells more e-books than traditional books through its online bookstore. On Christmas Day, the company reported, customers bought or downloaded close to one million e-books during the 24-hour span.

Meanwhile, Amazon claims that more people turned on their new Kindles, downloaded more Kindle apps and bought more Kindle e-books on Christmas Day than any other day in the history of the device. Simply put, the e-book market is white-hot as we head into the New Year.

But we do wish that Amazon would stop counting downloads of free books on its site as purchases!  ($0.00 price).  Kinda inflates the "trend" they are trying to prove ...

Great point, Chris, thanks for pointing that out. It's also interesting to note that the Barnes and Noble data includes all versions of the Nook, while Amazon specifically pointed to sales of the Kindle 3 as its best seller of all time. Regardless, the e-books space will be an exciting one to watch in 2011.

I got the increasing popularity of eReaders first hand.  I sell an eBook called the Used Boat Buying Guide from my yachting blog, and have been offering it as a PDF download.  I received my first request for a refund as the eBook was not readable on her eReader.  My plans for offering the book on Kindle, iTunes, and others has now been accelerated!

Thanks for the kick in the pants! :-)

Yep, it's one of those things. Like the iOS apps. Keep up or get left behind, for sure.

Always keep you hoppin.

Interesting.  These readers and e-books may be the saviors of the publishing world.  Printed media has been in decline for years, but electronic versions are picking up steam.

As I think about it, this goes hand in hand with the other post about web users paying for digital content.

Too bad there are no trade-in options. I received the Nook for Mother's Day, only to have the less expensive version come out a month later, and the color version 5 months later.
