Online consumers not only spent record amounts during the 2010 holiday season, they also saved more than ever by using coupons.

Retailmenot.com, the most heavily trafficked coupon site offering more than 485,000 online and offline deals, released its 2010 Holiday Consumer Coupon Report on Thursday. As consumers continue to search harder for discounts and the excitement builds around daily deals sites such as Groupon, it comes as little surprise that the 2010 holidays were a boon for coupon users.

And also for the retailers that issued coupons. RetailMeNot reports that it generated $847 million in sales for merchants in 2010 – a 53-percent increase over 2009. Holiday visits to the site, meanwhile, increased nearly 30 percent over the 2009 season, and shoppers saved a record $32.2 million with coupons in November and December.

Some other interesting facts from the report include that Amazon and Victoria’s Secret were the retailers most searched for by coupon-seeking shoppers on RetailMeNot during the 2010 holidays, and the most popular coupons during the two-month period were from Target, Bath and Body Works, Coach Factory Store and IHOP.

Curiously, East Coast shoppers displayed a particular fondness for coupons during the 2010 holidays. Led by New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey, the top eight coupon-using states are all on the East Coast, followed by No. 9 Illinois and No. 10 Pennsylvania.
