Google Cracks Down on Rogue Advertisers


Google has rogue advertisers in their crosshairs, announcing this week a few new requirements to its existing AdWords policies that cover disclosure and usage of personal information.

Any Adwords advertiser anywhere in the world whose site requests payment, financial, or personal information from visitors, will need to make any needed changes as soon as possible to avoid having ads suspended.

Google is requiring it Adwords advertisers not just to describe how the personal information solicited is ultimately used (part of the previous policy) but now also make that information accessible before site visitors submit their details (presumably this will be part of the Adwords review process).

Advertisers will also need to indicate how people can opt out of emails, phone calls or other direct communication (presumably like postal mail). Finally, Adwords is requring all advertisers to use SSL when collecting payments and certain financial and personal information (like bank account and social security numbers).

Any business worth their salt should already use SSL when collection of personal information is sought, though I recommend it to clients for even collection of such things as e-mail and addresses. Having a SSL in-place insures that your information stream is not corrupted.

While I applaud this move by Google, I think this is a reflection of modern society whereas there is no (or little) responsibility placed on the user/consumer, and a "big brother" steps in.  I'm an advocate for protecting clients but seriously, anyone who provides info to sites that are not "https" are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.  There has to be a burden of responsibility left with the user/consumer.  The increasing burdens placed on a business by "big brothers" to protect every cerebrally challenged individual are not a good thing.

And ironically, this move is by a company who was receently discovered to have been capturing the personal data of private citizens during their local search drive-bys.

SSL is standard, Google may be over stepping their boundaries to require opt-in policies.
