Content delivery network MaxCDN recently announced they would begin accepting the Bitcoin digital currency.
“Developers are a core part of our customer base and have been requesting this payment model,” said Justin Dorfman of NetDNA. “We’re strong believers in open source and part of that commitment is being responsive to developer requests. Bitcoin as the emerging 'coin of the realm' for this community and we’re excited at the opportunity to be accepting Bitcoins.”
MaxCDN, a brand of NetDNA, is not the only company accepting Bitcoin these days. Ebay made waves several weeks ago indicating that they might at some point accept Bitcoin, dating site OKcupid currently does accept the currency and a handful of others have jumped on the BitCoin bandwagon. But can or should you start accepting Bitcoin?
We'll leave the decision on whether to accept BitCoin up to you (it's still a rather volatile market so proceed with caution) but getting started isn't as difficult as you might imagine.
Should your potential audience interested in using Bitcoin be small, perhaps just consider indicating on your website that you accept the virtual currency and that you will need to be contacted directly for information. Should there be a greater need amongst your audience, consider a deeper website integration. For example, if you sell products or services on your website (goods or services), you'll want to use a Bitcoin merchant solution (see the list below) to actually accept the Bitcoins. If you sell things in a brick and mortar shop, customers can pay using their mobile phone app, so consider adding a QR code near your register to which the customers can scan with their phone and pay.
