A massive gap exists between the amounts of time consumers spend on mobile retail websites versus how much money is spent on mobile retail.

Radware, a provider of application delivery and application security solutions for virtual and cloud data centers, wanted to figure out why. Its annual "2013 State of the Union: Mobile Ecommerce Performance" report revealed that the majority of online retailers are failing to meet users' demand for pages that load in 4 seconds or less. Most eye-opening for retailers, however, is that 97 percent of abandonment rate in online shopping carts is due to slow retailer mobile sites.

This obviously means there is a huge, wasted revenue opportunity for online retailers. After all, by the end of 2013, m-commerce is expected to generate 16 percent of all online sales, an increase of 68 percent from 2012.

“The mobile Web is a difficult environment for retailers to navigate,” said Tammy Everts, Web performance evangelist, Radware. “Building Web pages that perform well across all devices, browsers and connection types remains a significant challenge for site owners, and serving an ideal experience to all visitors is difficult. Fortunately, there are tools available that accelerate and optimize Web performance, as well as automate the implementation of advanced performance best practices across multiple platforms. Site owners should consider Web performance solutions that offer acceleration gains and accelerates performance for both fixed and mobile clients.”

Other key findings of the "2013 State of the Union: Mobile Ecommerce Performance" report are highlighted in the infographic below:

There may be a huge connection between the Device and its connection speed and the speed at which the mobile site loads. Also because some phones are more powerful than others and tablets especially more so ( typically 512 M to 2 GB RAM vs the average phone of under 1 GB RAM ), there can be distinct differences when loading mobile sites from varying devices

While retailers are encouraged to make their sites mobile friendly, customers should understand that among  other things the number of images on a retailer's site affects the load time greatly.
