It seems as though the design world has embraced a new trend going into 2014: Flat.
Microsoft may have started the trend with its "tile" design and Apple followed suite with the release of iOS 7. Now, however, even popular social sharing service AddThis has jumped on board.
Earlier this month AddThis announced updated product icons, which are flat and minimal in design. According to the company, the design wasn’t rolled out “just because”. Rather, the design change aims to enhance users' site performance. In fact, the AddThis blog reveals that the new icon sizes are reduced by approximately 40 percent, which means that the social service images will load faster. Plus, preliminary tests of the icons on the AddThis blog show that the smaller and flatter design led to a click increase of 48 percent.
That said, it is important to note that the icons were updated automatically at launch, so current AddThis users don't have to deploy new code or edit any templates to get the updated look. How do you feel about the new flat design trend? Let us know in the Comments Section below.
