Death of Email, Search Greatly Exaggerated

Social networking is undoubtedly becoming one of the most popular activities for users on the Web, but the old standbys search and email continue to lead the category by a wide margin. A new Pew Internet survey finds that both are done by 92 percent of online adults in the United States, followed by getting online news (76 percent), shopping (71 percent) and social networking (65 percent). When asked about daily use, email was just slightly ahead of search with 61 percent of the 2,277 respondents saying they use email daily, as opposed to the 59 percent who said they use search every day. The rise of the social Web does in some ways threaten the sustainability of both email and search, but they have lost little if any ground on this list since Pew began collecting the data in 2002.
