All good operating systems
go to heaven, but it appears
that HP is going to keep webOS around a little bit longer. New
CEO Meg Whitman recently announced that the operating
system, made infamous during the 2011 HP TouchPad fiasco,
will now be available to developers under an open-source license.
Whitman says that this direction “is the best way to ensure
that the benefits of webOS are accessible to the largest
possible ecosystem.” This is really good news for webOS
users because their devices won’t be rendered obsolete, but
probably not such great news for HP – which spent well over
$3 billion developing the product.
