Revenue from mobile applications will soar from $5.2 billion in 2010 to $15.1 billion by the end of this year, according to research from Gartner, Inc. The surge will be the result of more than 18 billion downloads by users on their smartphones and tablets running applications from Apple, Android, Blackberry and others. The revenues will continue to climb, says Gartner, as users become more trusting of paid applications and increasingly familiar with the payment processes involved. One of the strongest forces behind the growing app economy, however, will be advertising, which will account for nearly a third of all app revenues by 2014.
