A recent study of Web businesses from 11 different countries indicates that open-source software is used by more than half of the 547 organizations surveyed, compared to less than 10 percent five years ago and 30 percent three-and-a-half years ago. An increasing amount of companies today are adopting open-source software for their core business functions rather than using it to simply defray the cost of commercial software. Among the most popular providers of open-source business software are SugarCRM, OpenOffice, Jaspersoft and Zimbra. The Gartner analysts behind the study recommend that all companies have a formal open-source usage policy in place before adoption.
