SundaySky recently examined video’s role in e-commerce and found that the majority of retailers fail to properly optimize their videos for search. Barely half of the top 50 e-commerce sites (54%) are indexing any videos on Google, and only 30 percent have more than 10 videos indexed. QVC, for instance, has more than 17,000 videos on its site but only five are indexed by Google. Of the more than 9,000 videos on Buy.com, a paltry 28 are indexed. The report suggests that those low numbers may be the result of a generally poor SEO tactic being used by 66 percent of all e-commerce retailers, which is embedding their videos as popup windows rather than as objects in the Web pages or in separate tabs.
