Google released a new version of its AdWords Editor yesterday with several noteworthy updates.

Advertisers are now able to make changes in a spreadsheet or custom application and import CSV files directly into the editor. Google has also sped up the download process. Advertisers can download individual campaigns they want to edit and leave the rest of the account alone.

The keyword opportunities tool has received a few changes as well. On the "Search-based Keywords" tab (the AdWords Editor version of the Search-based Keyword Tool) Advertisers can now view and organize new keywords by topical category so they find the keywords that are most relevant to an account. When that data is exported, the keywords opportunities columns (such as volume and competition) will also be included.

The release includes a few navigation changes (column auto-sizing, horizontal scrolling, column selection and a data picker) but the most noteworthy development is the release of the Keyword Opportunities tool.

The tool (which consists of two parts - keyword expansion and keyword multiplier) aims to help advertisers generate new keywords. The keyword expansion tool (available under the tools menu) generates keyword ideas based on descriptive words or phrases that advertisers choose. The list of keywords generated shows the volume of searches (per month) and the level of competition (average number of advertisers per month bidding on the search terms) for the keyword. Both are shown on a scale of 0 to 5.

The keyword multiplier is another interesting feature in the updated Adwords Editor. The tool combines lists of terms that advertisers create to provide new keyword ideas. For example, enter "discount" and "affordable" in list 1, and "hotel" and "motel" in list two and the combined list will generate keyword ideas such as "discount hotel," "discount motel," "affordable motel," and "affordable motel." Important to note here that the tool will automatically exclude keywords with low search traffic. In order to do this, Adwords Editor looks at search traffic for the language and location you have specified.
