Search engine optimization professionals are watching the rich snippets space very closely as it presents an effective way to differentiate a listing on the search results pages and may even positively influence placement.

Google today released rich snippets for applications. Rich snippets for shopping, recipes, reviews, video, events and most recently music have been introduced but when it comes to software, rich snippets may have just found their best use yet thanks to the threat of malware and bloatware.

Application snippets can currently be seen from several marketplaces and review sites including the Android Market, Apple iTunes, and CNET.

Mandatory properties include name, description, URL and image but there are other properties which can be included such as the author of the app, the aggregate rating, reviews, offers (indicating what marketplaces carry the application), the content rating, date published, operating systems required, the language of the app, file size and format, features provided, an interaction count, as well as screenshots.
