The local deals space just got a lot more congested due to some big announcements from Facebook. The launch of Facebook Deals and the effect it will have on Facebook Places creates new challenges for coupon providers such as Groupon and all of its competitors, as well as location-based check-in services such as Foursquare and all of its competitors.

For its part, Groupon made an announcement of its own. In partnership with Conduit, the group-buying innovator launched the new Groupon Browser App that immediately notifies users of deals no matter where they are on the Web, giving them easy access to each offer. The new app, which is available in the Conduit App Marketplace, has already been installed by more than 2.5 million users.

The app works directly in the browser and is compatible with Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer. It uses location-based targeting to show users their daily Groupons as soon as they become available, and users can share the deals through email and their favorite social networks.

The Conduit network is now powering browser apps for more than 260,000 Web publishers and their 200 million users. They are gaining in popularity in key markets around the world, and also becoming increasingly viral. Conduit saw a 67-percent monthly increase in app sharing on social networking sites during October.
