The Internet grew by more than 3 million domain names in the second quarter of 2010 according to VeriSign's Domain Name Industry Brief, bringing the total to 196.3 million Top Level Domains (TLDs).

The second quarter total represents an increase of 2 percent over the first quarter of 2010. Compared to the second quarter of 2009, registrations grew by 12.3 million, or 7 percent, across the industry.

The combined base of .com and .net domain names exclusviely surpassed 100 million, finishing the quarter with an adjusted zone size of 101.5 million. New .com and .net registrations totaled 7.9 million during the second quarter, an increase of 13 percent from a year ago. The .com/.net renewal rate for the second quarter was 73.2 percent, up from 72.1 percent for the first quarter.

GoDaddy Adds MX Domains to TLD Offerings

Web hosting and domain registrar GoDaddy announced yesterday it is adding Mexico's MX domains to its portfolio.

You don't see too many .MX domains (the country code top-level domain of Mexico) as it was only offered to a few select institutions in the last two decades. Now, Mexico is offering the extension for worldwide use. There is a lot of potential for growth in that specific geographic and cultural market. According to Internet World Stats, the number of Spanish-speaking Internet users has grown 619 percent in the last eight years. More than 130 million Spanish speakers use the Internet, including 27 million users in Mexico, making it one of the top three languages on the Web.

Go Daddy opened registration for sub-extension .COM.MX in May. Now, anyone who owned a sub-extension prior to March 1, 2009 can participate in pre-registration for a .MX domain at GoDaddy.com.

VeriSign Domain Name Industry Brief

Thirty-three million new domain names were registered in 2007 according to VeriSign in its March 2008 Domain Name Industry Brief. This brings the number of domain names to 153 million worldwide (top level domains - TLD's only) representing a 27% increase over Q4 07, and a 5% growth over Q1 07 with .com and .net domains reaching 80.4 million (a rise of 24% YoY).

VeriSign’s March 2008 Domain Name Industry Brief also shows that .com and .net renewals rose slightly in Q3 07 to 74%, four percentage points up on the average 70% recorded in previous years.
