Last week, Freelancer.com revealed the figures for what it found to be the 50 fastest growing online jobs for the first quarter of 2013. What the global outsourcing marketplace found was that the e-commerce industry continues to grow at an impressive rate, Android is starting to catch up with Apple, marketers are returning to the loving embrace of email over Twitter and Facebook and much more.

By analyzing 283,490 jobs during the quarter, Freelancer.com found that e-commerce is steadily dominating the “consumer retail landscape,” as other retail outlets with a brick-and-mortar presence are having trouble adjusting to a consumer base that is “no longer geographically captive.”

The e-commerce industry netted an impressive 19 percent increase in online jobs in Q1 2013, and as a result, e-commerce technologies have also been bringing in more employees. For example, shopping cart solution providers have increased jobs by 18 percent, while Magento, specifically, saw a 14 percent lift.

This has also spurred interest in Core Web 2.0 technologies, with an increased demand in jobs based around HTML5 (up 20 percent), CSS (15 percent), PHP (nine percent), jQuery (seven percent), MySQL (three percent) and WordPress (20 percent), largely because they allow e-commerce companies of all shapes and sizes to create mature, scalable online stores that “have all the feature of a massive retailer like Amazon” for a low price.

Elsewhere, in the mobile technology sector, Android jobs have gone up by over 20 percent, while iPad and iPhone-centric jobs only rose by 11 and five percent, respectively. This is primarily because Apple has had trouble penetrating the market in developing nations, which account for approximately 85 percent of the world’s population.

When it comes to social, Twitter has seen a nice boom, with jobs growing by 18 percent; this is significantly better than Facebook, for which jobs actually fell by four percent. However, both social networks have been taking a backseat when it comes to online marketers, who have been returning to email marketing as the primary way to drive customers to their websites. Email marketing jobs actually went up by 21 percent during the first quarter of this year.

On top of that, SEO jobs have been recovering from the industry's three percent slip in the fourth quarter of 2012, with SEO jobs rising by eight percent, and content based jobs like article submission or technical writing seeing increases of 54 and 26 percent, respectively.

Plus, 3D design jobs have been increasing steadily thanks to the introduction of 3D printers into the mainstream. 3D modeling jobs are up 21 percent, while 3D rendering jobs are up 13 percent and the 3D animation industry saw six percent growth.

Finally, back-office business process outsourcing (BPO) jobs saw a huge 113 percent increase in Q1, as small and enterprise-level companies, alike, have been outsourcing simple (and affordable) work to get ahead of the competition.

Finding a job can prove to be a difficult task, especially in today’s economy.

And although most media stories focus on how the economy is affecting the job search for recent grads, many have overlooked how previous generations are dealing with unemployment – until now.

AARP recently launched Work Reimagined, which is a social networking site that is powered by LinkedIn. The site connects professionals, who are on the job hunt and at least 50 years old, with employers who are currently hiring.

The site launched with job openings from almost 120 employers who have agreed to the Work Reimagined pledge – a commitment to treat all employees equally, regardless of their age.

“Work Reimagined enables experienced workers to come together in a vibrant online community to share your views and help move through ‘what’s next’ career moments,” says Rob Romasco, President of AARP. “It opens the way for access to workforce resources, as well as the opportunity to connect with other experienced workers in a peer-to-peer environment.”

Work Reimagined also offers job listings that are independent of LinkedIn, as well as features tips and advice to help people land a job or start a business. According to AARP, many top companies, including Toys R Us, Lowe’s and AT&T, have already taken the Work Reimagined pledge.

It’s that time again, online employment platform Elance has released its quarterly Global Online Employment Report, which reveals escalating growth in online work, including an increasing demand for creative talent and traditional jobs.

According to the Q2 results, the number of businesses hiring on Elance increased 35 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago, and more than 80,000 of the new jobs posted were in the creative category – which is up 60 percent over a year ago.

In fact, the demand for creative skills such as web design (+574%), voice acting (+295%) and content writing (+256%) were each up extensively compared to the same time last year. The fact that companies are investing in creative talent could show a commitment to growth and indicate a shift in how businesses engage customers.

Although technology remains the top earning category for online jobs, the Q2 report also shows that more professionals with traditional careers are leaving the cubicle for the World Wide Web. For example, manufacturing designers (+241%), architects (+198%) and family attorneys (+179%), all saw triple-digit increases compared to Q2 last year. Additonally, engineering also saw a surge in online hiring, including Chemical Engineering (+182%), Electrical Engineering (+126%) and Civil Engineering (+100%).

“The ease of working online – coupled with the ability to instantly connect with a highly specialized global talent pool – is driving massive adoption of online work,” says Fabio Rosati, CEO of Elance. “For the first time, demand for technical talent is being matched by equally strong demand for creative talent.”

Finding “The One” can
be difficult, not to mention stressful. It requires patience, optimism and a
real understanding of what you’re looking for so that, in the end, both parties
can be satisfied. Thankfully, the Internet has come along to streamline the
selection process for everyone out there looking to settle down.

I am, of course, talking about looking for a job. Like
looking for love, finding one’s ideal job is hardly an easy task; even if
someone knows exactly what they want, it isn’t always readily available.

The folks behind Path.To realized this, and recently
launched the Web’s first online job search service that provides job seekers
with unique compatibility scores that will help them discover the opportunity
that is just right for them. In other words, this is like eHarmony for job seekers.

The new Path.To Score ranking system will analyze each
applicants individual characteristics, as well as those of each business and
unique position available, to ultimately match up the top talent with the top
job.

Path.To will determine
the Score primarily based on three different criteria:

- Social Graph
Path.To will be able to utilize a user’s interests from their Facebook and
Twitter accounts, as well as their contributions and reputations on online
professional communities (including Behance, Dribbble, Forrst and Github) to
get an idea of the applicant’s interest level in professional topics.

- Personality The
service will also identify and incorporate information about what a user finds
important at their next position, which can be anything from dress code to
office culture to benefits, which will allow them to better match applicants
with their ideal work environments.

- Skills and Experience
While Path.To will obviously highlight an applicant’s work experience and
education, the service will also focus on specific skills that each unique
position requires, enabling users to show off their experience through
skills-based endorsements.

Currently, Path.To is only available in the San Francisco
Bay Area and works exclusively with the interactive design, software
engineering and IT professions. This is in large part because of the rapid
growth that many companies, both emerging and established, in the Silicon Valley are currently undergoing. The service
plans to expand into other markets, most notably Chicago
and New York,
by the end of 2012.

At present, there are jobs being featured by over 100
different tech companies on Path.To. Who knows, maybe one of them is right for
you!

The Linux Foundation and Dice.com conducted a joint research study to understand the hiring outlook for Linux professionals – and it’s quite rosy.

Of the 2,000 survey respondents, more than 8 in 10 (81 percent) said that hiring Linux talent is a priority in 2012, and more than half of the firms surveyed said that they are increasing Linux hires relative to jobs created in other skill areas.

The problem is that 85 percent of respondents indicated that finding Linux talent is "somewhat" to "very" difficult, which makes those skilled in Linux very sought-after talent in 2012.

The best part will likely be the pay. While pay increases for tech professionals averaged just 2 percent in 2011, Linux professionals have seen 5-percent increases year-over-year and a 15-percent jump in bonus payouts, according to the recent Dice Salary Survey.

To start 2012, according to the report, hiring managers are pursuing Linux developers (67 percent) and systems administrators (55 percent) most often to fill open positions, although IT managers (20 percent) and outside consultants (15 percent) are also in demand.

The survey also revealed that companies are most aggressively targeting the mid-level professional, with 75 percent of respondents looking for Linux professionals with three to five years of experience.

Unlike the traditional employment market, the number of businesses that are hiring online workers has increased 107 percent in the last year.

Hiring trends from the past quarter include an increased need for those that have skills with 3D multimedia and video, as well as skills in mobile — including a 32 percent increase in demand for iOS skills, a 25 percent rise in demand for those with iPad-specific skills and a 14 percent increase for workers with Android skills.

Additionally, the report shows an increased focus on CRM and customer data, including a 35 percent rise in demand for Salesforce.com experts, a 9 percent increase for SugarCRM and 29 percent increase for Data Interpretation.

According to the report, the top five overall skills in demand include PHP programmers, Wordpress programmers, article writing, graphic design and HTML programmers.

CyberCoders, a leading worldwide recruiting firm, has done some heavy research and found that the tech hiring picture is looking rosy. Not only are companies hiring more tech positions but also at higher salaries. In February 2010, CyberCoders listed 59,500 tech job postings, compared to 150,000 in February 2011.

"There is a heavy demand for job candidates with experience using JavaScript, C#, and SQL, MySQL, and PHP," said Matt Miller, chief technology officer, CyberCoders. "Developers are required to build rich dynamic web applications, and with the mobile and web industries moving faster than ever before, engineers are needed across a multitude of verticals. Companies must have a diverse tech team that can handle web, mobile and app development as companies grow. We are also seeing companies continue to pay high salaries for these difficult to fill positions."

According to CyberCoders, the most common tech job available is Product Manager, with an average salary of $106K. That's followed by IT Manager ($94K) and Systems Engineer ($87K). As for the top skills sought after in 2011, CyberCoders lists JavaScript (1), followed by Java (2), SQL (3), HTML (4), C# (5), CSS (6), MySQL (7), PHP (8), Linux (9) and AJAX (10).

But haven't we seen this before? Companies went on all-out hiring binges before the dot-com bust of 2001. But, according to Heidi Golledge, CEO and co-founder of CyberCoders, "There is a greater demand for candidates who have diverse skill sets than in the late nineties and 2000-2001. Typically the hiring demand ten years ago was fueled by the need to build websites backed by new venture funding – and a hope that a companies’ concept would be the next Google or Yahoo. Companies were hiring based on projected revenue. Start-ups now, typically have more experienced management, a sounder foundation and a much higher chance of success."

Dice.com - a job board specializing in the tech industry - released findings from an online survey that shows a major lack of mobile developers in the workforce. The very good news is that companies are looking to hire.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, "Almost 57 percent of employers and outside recruiters that hired for mobile-related jobs this year plan to boost such hires in the next 12 months, the survey, conducted on behalf of Bloomberg Businessweek.com, showed. More than half the respondents described the supply of quality mobile-software designers and engineers as 'scarce.' "

Driving this great need and opportunity is companies' desire for mobile apps - from iPhone to Android and BlackBerry. Of course, where there is demand, there is money to be made.

The survey found that:

The most common salary range for mobile developers was $75,000 to $100,000, with 28% of respondents saying they pay $100,001 to $125,000.

Experience with Apple's mobile platform carried the most weight on résumés, with 72 percent of recruiters saying they are hiring for development of iPhone applications, and 38 percent saying iPhone expertise is the most attractive among platforms.

About 60 percent are hiring for Android development, and 23 percent said new recruits with knowledge of Google's platform are most highly prized.

This month, Dice's site had 758 job listings requiring skills or experience with the iPhone, up from 264 a year ago. The site had 685 listings requiring Android skills, up from 158.

Freelance marketplace Elance released results of its online hiring practices survey which revealed that the majority of businesses (64%) prefer online hiring versus the traditional model of hiring onsite. That's not surprising when you're dealing with an audience that hires freelance workers online with some frequency (nearly 50% had 2-5 hires in the past 12 months) but it might give some added comfort to those looking to do some hiring online.

Of those that do hire online 87% view it as a critical business strategy to enhance profitability and competitiveness according to the Elance survey. The reason employers like hiring online is that it is cost effective, flexible (staffing up and down as needed), accessible (always-on access), geographic reach, better candidate information and increased visibility (able to monitor work and collaborate online).

“The majority of businesses report that while they are not adding many new employees onsite, they are opting to hire and distribute work to online teams as a core strategy to help them do more with less. Elance provides these businesses with a full featured online workplace that enhances their ability to hire and manage talent and get work done,” said Ellen Pack, Vice President of Marketing at Elance.

One of the most interesting aspects of the survey was a section on the criteria employers consider important when hiring online - take a look below.
