KickApps Gets HTML5 Friendly

Social software platform KickApps will support HTML5 in the next release of its App Studio. The change will benefit non-programmers interested in creating customizable HTML5 media players and applications.

The App Studio is essentially an authoring environment in which users can create apps on devices which support either Flash or HTML5. The HTML5 apps will appear and function as they do on Flash-enabled devices, and designers/developers will be able to customize them with familiar scripting languages, CSS and JavaScript. As KickApps remarked on Twitter “it’s the end of broken Flash videos in iDevices!”

“The latest release of App Studio has catapulted HTML5 forward by providing drag-and-drop authoring to an otherwise immature standard,” said Alex Blum, chief executive officer of KickApps. “For web publishers seeking to take advantage of the combined power of HTML5 and Flash, the App Studio is an easy-to-use, integrated solution that will let them create innovative and customized media players and apps once for audiences across multiple platforms and devices. As social video publishing continues to grow in complexity, KickApps will provide simple solutions to publishers of all sizes.”

KickApps, in collaboration with Adobe, will also be authoring a specification as an extension of the existing Open Source Media Framework (OSMF), enabling existing OSMF plug-in providers to be able to create plug-ins for the latest version of App Studio with minimal development.

Facebook App Development with KickApps

Social software platform KickApps announced the availability of a development suite for its AppStudio product which enables the creation of social applications on Facebook.

With non-programmer friendly drag-and-drop functionality the platform can be used to create and deploy custom video players, social widgets and rich media ad units. The apps can then be used as a Facebook fan page or as a tab on a Facebook page.

“Because a data-integrated experience can easily deploy to multiple environments, our solution invites a ‘viral loop’ of traffic to and from our customers’ websites. By providing an easy-to-use interface, the user simply drags applications or components onto the canvas to customize every aspect of their appearance or functionality,” said Alex Blum, CEO of KickApps.

KickApps Joins the Video Monetization Trend

Social media platform KicksApps just announced a solution which lets its users generate revenue through in-stream video advertising.

KickApps (covered here and here at Website Magazine before) has integrated its solution with Advertising.com's Lightningcast video ad serving system. Publishers will be able to serve ads "via both editorial and user-generated video content on their KickApps-powered social media sites" according to the release.

“Owners and distributors of broadband video are realizing the potential of in-stream advertising,” said Lynda Clarizio, president, Advertising.com. “This combination of user-friendly community building and streamlined video ad serving will enable publishers of all sizes to deliver video ads that are relevant to their specific site content.”

YouTube also announced this week that it will be extending its Partner Program to let its most active community members earn money from their videos. Over 100 users have been added to that YouTube program, such as tayzonday, hotforwords, apauledtv, and peteandbrian.

Scripps Networks Interactive announced a strategic partnership with KickApps Corporation to deploy its social media and community-building applications at DIYnetwork.com, a leading home improvement website. In an area called “My Projects,” visitors can now post videos and pictures of their own home improvement work and swap stories and tips through blogs and message boards. Designed to seamlessly integrate with the site's existing look and feel, “My Projects” is part of Scripps Networks Interactive's continuing push to integrate community-building features into all their Web properties.

“Scripps understands that the Web is shifting away from static destination sites to ‘open portals,' on which user-generated and editorial content coexist to create dynamic, participatory experiences,” said Alex Blum, CEO of KickApps. “Through this project, we provide the framework for Scripps to engage and grow their audience at their existing site and in the context of the DIY Network brand.”
