If you’re as into email as we are, you will want to roll up our sleeves and dig into the data because it looks like much of the data is quite actionable.

Some of the report’s highlights from this year include:

- Sunday generated considerably high open (12.2%) and click rates (4.4%) on average when compared to the rest of the week

- The highest volume of opens occur between 6 and 11 am local time

- Clients that sent emails less than once a month experienced a bounce rate of 5.1% while those that sent daily saw a much lower bounce rate of 0.4%

- Personalizing the email subject line generated 0.8% click rate, while personalizing the message boosted click rates to 3%

- Subject lines consisting of 4 to 15 characters generated the highest open rate of 14.1%

“Email marketing is extremely measurable and we have a great amount of data at our fingertips,” says Raj Khera, CEO of MailerMailer. “This report is provided for free as a community service to help businesses improve their email marketing effectiveness.”

Email marketing service provider MailerMailer released its tenth Email Marketing Metrics Report and it contains some valuable information about recent open rate trends (based on industry and list size) which will prove immensely valuable to online marketers.

Interesting findings in the report include:

- Overall unique open rate has decreased to 11.2% over the past year
- Open and click rates are the highest on Sundays
- Subject lines of 35 characters or less tend to receive 52% higher open rates
- Bounce rates can drop below 1% as mailing frequency increases
- Personalized messages get about 7% higher open rates
- 75.8% of total opens are expected in the first 24 hours

"Email marketing is a great business tool because of the ability to track your success," say CEO Raj Khera. "This report gives professionals the information they need to gauge performance and determine what improvements will lead to better performing email campaigns."

MailerMailer released its ninth bi-annual Email Marketing Metrics
Report today, highlighting the latest trends in email marketing. The 38-page
report is filled with charts, tips and data that provide businesses with
relevant information to help them adjust their email marketing strategy to
cater to their audience's changing needs.

Perhaps the most interesting takeaways are the most
frequently-seen terms used by marketers in email subject lines. The top 10
most popular terms were 1) news, 2) party, 3) newsletter, 4) free, 5) night, 6)
sale, 7) com, 8) update, 9) holiday, and 10) week.

Other interesting points included in the report:

Emails are
being opened sooner: 32.6% of all opens occur within the first two hours,
compared to 29.6% six months prior

Click
rates held steady, rising just slightly by .08% in the second half of 2008

Email
deliverability keeps increasing -- more emails are reaching recipients'
     inboxes

Religious/Spiritual emails are getting the
highest open and click rates compared to other industries

"The key to leading winning campaigns in the midst of a recession is to
move with the ebb and flow of changing subscriber preferences," says
MailerMailer CEO Raj Khera. "Our report covers many important trends marketers
need to be aware of to make strategic decisions in running their campaigns."

This study, which analyzes email statistics of over 350 million emails in 21 different industry groups from January to June 2008, uncovered several interesting email marketing trends, including (and most notably) that emails are being opened sooner.

From the release: Among the recent email trends discovered in the research was that people are opening emails sooner; one-third of the study's email messages' opens occur within the first two hours of reception. This is an almost ten percent increase from last year. And as a reprise from last year's shorter subject line length theme, there is a new chart exploring the varying performance of emails with different subject line lengths.

Other key points discussed in the report include how personalization affects open and click rates, the click rates by format, bounce percentage by mailing frequency, total emails opened by hour and open and click rates by list size and industry. MailerMailer CEO Raj Khera comments, "We hope our report encourages email marketers to track, test and continually improve their individual email campaigns." He adds, "Email marketers can implement best practices gathered in this report, while still catering to the unique preferences and nuances of their own audience."

The email metrics report from MailerMailer can be downloaded for free.
