A new service from online employment platform Elance and application programming interface (API) management provider Mashery matches skilled developers with freelance API projects on Elance.

Through Developer Connect, developers with experience building Web and enterprise backend systems to mobile platforms like iOS and Android can quickly tap into Elance’s growing list of API integration projects. In addition, businesses can search the extensive pool of tested and rated contract developers to find the right talent for their next API integration projects.

“By partnering with Mashery, we offer businesses access to developers who can leverage APIs and build all kinds of apps,” says York Poon, vice president of product at Elance. “At the same time, we are increasing the number of API integration jobs available on the Elance platform.”

Businesses seeking developer talent for API integration projects are now able to browse and review pre-screened Elance professionals on the Developer Connect page on the Mashery website. Developer Connect also features an API Jobs category that allows developers to review and apply to new projects on Elance.

Gartner has predicted that by the year 2014, a many as 75 percent of Fortune 1000 companies will offer public application programming interfaces (API) as a means of disclosing a range of materials, from media content and product catalogs to commercial transactions and medical records.

An increase in API usage will mean that IT managers will demand more control over how API traffic is managed.

Mashery, a provider of API management technology and services, plans to meet this issue head-on with its annoucement of the Mashery API Control Center, a platform designed for flexible routing and management of global API traffic, both in the cloud or on a site. The platform, which is the first in the industry, is run out of a single, powerful dashboard that provides highly scalable and comprehensive insights into API performance.

The Control Center will allow companies to "mix and match" between APIs run in the cloud and those on other premises based on security, speed and control requirements. This eliminates the need for companies and IT managers "to make an all-or-nothing decision between running APIs in the cloud or behind their own firewalls."

For each API, managers can choose one of two different deployment options. The first is Mashery Local, a new version of the company's traffic manager that operates entirely inside a corporate data center under the full control of IT managers. The other is Mashery Cloud, which is made up of two independent, global, enterprise-grade API distribution networks that offer four levels of failover and redundancy. The Cloud networks are operated by Mashery.

oneTXT, a provider of payment processing for social networks, today announced ORCA, a social-commerce transaction processing system with a Mashery-managed open API architecture designed for social media communities.

Why is this noteworthy? Existing payment solutions are either proprietary and closed or designed for other platforms such as the mobile device or Web-based commerce sites. The majority of microtransactions are less than $1, and with minimum fees averaging 30 cents for credit and gift cards, a 30 percent revenue loss brings the viability of such solutions in to question.

ORCA (Optimized Real-Time Currency Application) allows any social media company to process payments, manage loyalty and rewards programs, schedule advance orders of real and virtual goods, and communicate status with full control of the appearance of all of these transactions. The advantage? Fans/users can continue interacting with the site without ever having to leave the community they are attending.

ORCA will enable clients (digital publishers, social networks, MMORPG publishers, and even participation TV programs) with the tools to manage subscribers’ online transactions. “S-Commerce is inevitable. In fact, we see many communities reaching to cobble home-grown payment solutions together simply because prior to ORCA, there was nothing designed for the unique needs of this rapidly growing online segment,” said Roger Wood, CEO of oneTXT.

“These home grown systems get revenue flowing quickly, but carry tremendous development expenses and significant management distractions, while limiting future expansion and growth with close-ended technologies.”

Mashery (which manages the API’s for companies such as the New York Times and Best Buy) has been chosen as oneTXT’s partner in bringing the ORCA platform to social media communities and ensuring the open APIs integrate and operate within a community’s interface and back office operations.
