The rise of the mobile Web has been something of a headache for many advertisers and marketers, as it’s presented new problems with analytics and tracking that they must address, as well as re-presenting old concerns that they thought were long overcome.

One such issue is click fraud, which, while still a fringe problem on the Internet, has been mostly kept in check for years now thanks to various software and solutions that offer features created to combat it. Unfortunately, many mobile solutions aren’t as equipped to fight it, and as a result, mobile click fraud has seen a noticeable increase over the last few years. In fact, a recent Trademob study documented 10 million mobile ad clicks across 10 mobile networks and found that 40 percent of them were accidental or fraudulent.

To address this issue, mobile tracking platform iMobiTrax has released a handful of new features aimed at combating click fraud so that mobile-focused marketers and advertisers can improve their return on investment (ROI). It also included new traffic blocking rules, allowing users to set all rules to block, filter, active or inactive; they can even send all of the blocked clicks to a unique URL that they specify.

iMobiTrax lets its customers group and sort their data to immediately see where they are making and losing money, so that they can quickly increase their ROI and turn their focus to the devices, manufacturers, operating systems and ISPs or carriers that are actually helping them bring in money.

The announcement also introduced other new features added to the platform, including separate or multi-domain tracking, split testing options, the ability to track multiple offers, pass tracking tokens, weighted landing page options and the option to rotate both unlimited landing pages and unlimited offers.

As mobile browsing
moves from being a novelty to a necessity, many Web professionals are concerned
about how they will be able to accurately study user behavior and adjust their
mobile sites to meet the needs of their visitors.

This has opened up numerous opportunities for analytics
solutions providers to attempt to rectify this growing problem. Customer experience analytics company ClickTale is the latest to offer an answer with
the release of the beta version of ClickTale Mobile.

The solution will offer mobile customers a true-to-life
browsing experience at all levels of detail, meaning everything from aggregated
views to playable videos of individual sessions, and businesses will be able to
use the data gleaned to improve mobile usability, raise customer satisfaction
on average and increase their online ROI.

Seeing as mobile Internet usage has begun to surpass desktop
usage over the past year (according to Kleiner Perkins), it’s becoming increasingly
important for Web workers to optimize their mobile websites in order to stay
competitive. ClickTale Mobile can assist in those efforts by offering up data
that can be used to tweak a mobile site to reduce abandonment rates and increase
engagement, ultimately making it more beneficial to the company’s Web success.

ClickTale anticipates that the full version of ClickTale
Mobile will be available by the end of the year.

We wrote in the upcoming June issue of Website Magazine that mobile analytics is most likely the next sector of the online world to erupt, as the demand for measuring the effects that mobile has for businesses and developers increases every day.

One startup app analytics company called Localytics is looking to get ahead of the pack, and it has taken a fairly significant step forward by securing a new round of funding and releasing a new product.

“The need for mobile app analytics is exploding, fueled by continued growth in smartphones and the huge impact of Apple’s iPad, Samsung’s Galaxy and other tablets,” said Raj Aggarwal, CEO of Localytics. “This new financing will enable us to better meet that demand, as well as expand our product portfolio to meet the needs of the mid-market.”

With its enterprise offering, Localytics already helps some of the largest publishers of smartphone and tablet applications provide profitable apps to over 50 million end-users. With the release of its new Localytics Premium, many of the features that Localytics Enterprise subscribers enjoy are now available to smaller publishers.

Localytics Premium is available at $95 per month to both existing and new customers with Android, BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone and Windows Phone 7 applications. Through April 30, a 30-percent discount is available with the code APRIL30X6.

The problem, according to Bango, is that PC websites are not adapting fast enough to match mobile browsing trends and are failing to present mobile-friendly versions.

The problem may be that websites don't know how much mobile-originated traffic is hitting their site. Bango’s research reveals that between 3-10% of on-line traffic now comes from users entering web addresses on their mobile device.

Should We Blame the iPhone?
It’s not just iPhone users that are regularly accessing the internet from their phones. Researchers at IDC say that 1.3 billion people will connect to the Internet via mobile phones by end of 2008, and the vast majority of these mobile browsers are using mass market phones from Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

Bango Analytics for PCs is available as part of an Early Access Program. Webmasters install a line of code into the home page of their website and Bango starts measuring unique visitors to the website from mobile devices with specific details on the users’ country, network and device. All the data is viewable from the Bango Management tools console in real-time.
