DN2K, a company that specializes in developing machine-to-machine (M2M) remote monitoring and management systems, has announced that it will be using HTML5 as one of the core technologies in its business and industrial application cloud platform for monitoring and analyzing mobile devices.

The company stated that the use of HTML5 will allow DN2K to "future-proof" its applications while building bridges to "technology islands" because of the prevalent use of HTML5 by so many prominent developers, including Microsoft, Apple and Google.

HTML5 also plays a huge role in mobile development, supporting Android and iOS and enabling cross-platform portability.

The DN2K solution will be aimed at helping users extend the functionality, user interface and controls of business applications that secure mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, opening up opportunities in new markets for application developers without requiring them to rewrite their applications' code.

By basing the platform around the HTML5 technology, DN2K is able to ensure that all businesses or industrial application providers using the solution will be able to extend their offering's functionality to virtually any device, including heretofore unreleased smartphones and tablets.

We all know by now that Internet users are consuming more online video than ever, and that the rate of consumption continues to rise. Now, a potentially important study from MeFeedia tells us that consumers are considerably more engaged when watching video on their mobile devices than they are on desktop and laptop computers.

Coming on the heels of TubeMogul’s latest video analytics that reported the average online video viewing engagement to be under two minutes, here’s what MeFeedia found from analyzing 125,000 mobile users:

• iPad users, on average, will stick with a video for five minutes
• Symbian users for 4.1 minutes
• Android users for 3 minutes
• iPhone users for 2.4 minutes

This is particularly significant as marketers and publishers hammer out their strategies for mobile content, indicating there is a very real shift in consumer behavior when moving from a desktop to a mobile device. Also important to consider are the formats to be used by content creators, as moving away from Flash to the more tablet-ready HTML5 may offer greater rewards for publishers than we first thought.

While Steve Jobs is busy this morning patching all the iPhone 4's with Duct Tape, ABI Research is reporting that Linux-enabled mobile devices (led by Google's Android and upcoming Chrome OS) will comprise 62% of the operating systems shopping in all (non-smartphone) mobile devices by 2015.

“The number of Linux-oriented initiatives recently seen in the mobile industry indicates that Linux will be a key technology in the next generation of netbooks, media tablets, and other mobile devices,” says senior analyst Victoria Fodale.

ABI's study “Linux for Mobile Devices” examined the key market issues in the Linux ecosystem, as well as the technology drivers within the mobile device segment. The research report highlights the strengths and weakness of each mobile Linux platform including architecture, development, applications, and governance models. Detailed regional forecasts of shipments by each Linux-enabled platform are included.
