Top Domain Registrars

RegistrarStats (via Domain Name Wire) released the leading domain name registrars for the first half of 2009. While the data only covers .com, .net, .info, .org, .biz, .us and .mobi, it does provide excellent guidance on who's leading in the very competitive industry of domain registration and who's falling behind.

Who were the three leading domain registrars so far this year?
- GoDaddy – up 8.42% to 34,453,064 domains (includes Wild West Domains, GD’s reseller unit)
- eNom – up 2.6% to 9,039,185.
- Tucows – up 3.3% to 7,432,309
- 1&1 - up 3.9

While those registrars mentioned above are increasing the number of domains they manage, others are losing some control. Network Solutions is down 1.1%, Melbourne IT is down 3.5%, Moniker is down 2.4% and Dotster is down 2.8%.

Domain Showcase Auction Series

Oversee.net and its SnapNames.com and Moniker.com aftermarket companies introduced a monthly series of domain name Showcase Auctions.

The first auction of the series, entitled "Summer Stimulus," begins July 16 at noon PDT / 3:00 p.m. EDT and concludes July 21 at 12:15 p.m. PDT / 3:15 p.m. EDT. A catalog of domains being sold is listed at Snap Names. It will feature domain names available with low or no reserve pricing. Subsequent auction events will begin the second Tuesday of every month and end two days later on the second Thursday.

"These monthly Showcase Auctions are an integral part of our new auction strategy," said Peter Celeste, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Domain Services, Oversee.net. "The domain auction marketplace is evolving rapidly. Oversee.net recognizes that the largest potential for growth is in the corporate sector. In line with this, our Showcase Auctions target corporate buyers, as well as traditional domain investors, who prefer to make their purchases online in a flexible, user-friendly environment."

Domain name submissions are being accepted for future monthly auctions. Names for the August showcase auction must be submitted by July 28, 2009.

Domain Name Self-Serve Listing Service

Users of domain registrar Moniker will now be able to list domains for sale on domain name auction site SnapNames. Both companies are part of the Oversee network.

Domain sellers will be able to choose the appropriate listing format (auction or fixed priced) and transfer domains on the same day of the transaction, although the sale proceeds will not be available to sellers for seven days in most cases.

"After listening intently to buyer and seller marketplace requirements, we are offering this new functionality to our community of users," said Oversee.net President Jeff Kupietzky. "As people continue to develop Internet identities and expand their demand of domain names, it's absolutely essential to offer a comprehensive selection of quality domains. By allowing users to list from their Moniker accounts, we can quickly increase the availability of quality domains that may otherwise not be available."

Moniker Launches Domain MaxLock
