Security technology vendor McAfee has released a free open-source plugin for MySQL database users which shows detailed activity from database audits.

The plugin features visibility into database vulnerabilities and supports databases such as Oracle, Sybase, MS-SQL and DB2. The plugin, which is available on gitHub, requires no change to the existing database or network architecture.

“McAfee developed the free database audit plug-in to give the community of MySQL users a means of building enterprise-level database security around their databases,” said Dan Sarel, vice president of Database Security Product Management at McAfee. “When coupled with the McAfee Database Activity Monitoring sensor for MySQL, the data is subject to the same real-time analysis and policy enforcement as the data collected from other supported databases.”

You might have heard the news regarding MySQL and its trademark battle with some advertisers. I started thinking about how Google handles these requests. While it won't change the fact that you won't be able to bid on those terms, but if you are currently bidding you should know what's about to happen.

When Google receives a complaint from a trademark owner, the use of the trademark in ad text is investigated. But keywords are not disabled in response to the trademark complaint alone. Furthermore, according to Google, the investigation only affects ads served on or by Google.

If the investigation reveals that the advertiser is using the trademark in ad text, Google notifies the advertisers that they are required to remove the trademark. Google then prevents advertisers from using it in ad text in the future.

According to the company, "Google is dedicated to providing relevant advertising to our users, advertisers, and publishers alike. Accordingly, our trademark policy not to monitor the use of trademarks in the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Ireland aims to provide users with choices relevant to their keywords. At the same time, we investigate trademark violations in ad text both as a courtesy to the trademark owner and to ensure that ads are clear to users."

MySQL is now the third most in-demand skill on Elance, moving up three spots since October.

Over 1,300 MySQL jobs were posted on the freelance-work site in the last 30 days alone.

Robin Schumacher, MySQL director of product management, and Brian Aker, principal engineer at Sun Microsystems, are not surprised by the MySQL growth trend, according to a recent press release. "When you need a strong database management system - one that gives you the best TCO (total cost of ownership) - you choose MySQL," Schumacher said. Aker agrees, stating, "The thing that MySQL brought to the table when it came out was the ease of use and the ease of installation. MySQL came out in an era where comparable products were really complex and required a lot of knowledge to be able to use and install. With MySQL the user is able to take the database, download it, install it, understand it, and then apply it to their application."

This is a major new release of the world's most popular open source database. The production-ready MySQL 5.1 software is available for download now at http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/. MySQL 5.1 has been downloaded over 250,000 times in the days it has been generally available.

"MySQL 5.1's low total cost combined with its high performance, scalability and enterprise-class features is the right database solution for many large corporations and Web companies, especially in today's economic climate,” said Marten Mickos, senior vice president, Database Group, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "With more than a quarter of a million downloads of MySQL 5.1 in its first ten days, we are proud to deliver this robust product that is garnering such interest from the open source community."

New industry research shows the continued growth and maturation of the market for open source database management systems (DBMS). In Gartner, Inc.’s “The Growing Maturity of Open-Source Database Management Systems,” published in late November, Gartner VP Donald Feinberg reported that a recently conducted study by the firm demonstrated a 50% increase from 2007 to 2008 in the usage of open source DBMSs in production, repeating previous findings that revenue growth in the open source DBMS segment grew at a rate of 42% from 2006 to 2007, far outpacing the overall DBMS market at 13%.

Moving forward, Gartner projects 40% CAGR growth in the open source DBMS segment over the next five years, resulting in an estimated $1 billion market by 2013.

While some current tools provide good reports on overall activity -- none report usage by individual users, a specific database, or connecting client to help DBA's identify usage hogs among web hosting clients.

Software Workshop developed their own modifications to Open Source MySQL and called it ExtSQL and it's something you might want to look into. It gives DBAs a simple way to monitor activity by individual users, database, or even connection.

MySQL has an installed base of millions, with many installations running older versions. DBAs can be very reluctant to go through an upgrade process. Software Workshop decided to pursue this huge 'aftermarket' by offering source patches and binaries for older versions of MySQL on a variety of OS and hardware combinations. ExtSQL is being released under the GPL.
