Web.com (WWWW), a provider of online marketing services for small businesses, has bought Network Solutions, a top domain provider, for $560 million.

The deal offered Network Solutions $405 million in cash and 18 million shares of stock.

If the rumored price of what Go Daddy sold for is any indication ($2.25 billion), it seems that Web.com was on the better end of the bargaining for this deal.

As a result of Web.com’s new acquisition, trading shares have increased 24 percent, making the deal valued around $600 million.

Web.com’s domain growth continues with the attainment of Network Solutions, which is currently the fourth largest registrar. Web.com also already owns Registrar.com, which is the tenth largest registrar.

But although Web.com has gained more than 6,000 domains with the purchase of Network Solutions, Go Daddy still remains the largest domain provider with more than 30 percent of the domain market share and more than 40,000 domains.

iPhone App for Domain Search

Network Solutions has released a unique iPhone application that enables the search and purchase of domain names. Named DomainStorm, the application is Network Solution's first.

The application's BrainStorm feature provides creative suggestions for domain names by either shaking the iPhone or tapping the "Spin" button - pretty cool. The app then combines synonyms to create new domain names and displays the availability of the various combination of names.

Additional features of the application include WHOIS lookup, search history, geographically based search criteria, favorites lists, and related domain name suggestions (extension and spelling variations, expired domains with past renewal dates, and premium domains for sale from current domain holders).

“DomainStorm is the first of many mobile applications we plan to launch in the coming months that are geared to the needs of our small business customers,” said Navin Ganeshan, senior director of Product Strategy. “We believe mobile apps bring unprecedented capability and flexibility to our small business customers, and our ultimate goal is nothing short of enabling them to fully run their business from their mobile device -- including interacting with customers, managing transactions, checking their inventory levels, or monitoring their website analytics.”

Top Domain Registrars

RegistrarStats (via Domain Name Wire) released the leading domain name registrars for the first half of 2009. While the data only covers .com, .net, .info, .org, .biz, .us and .mobi, it does provide excellent guidance on who's leading in the very competitive industry of domain registration and who's falling behind.

Who were the three leading domain registrars so far this year?
- GoDaddy – up 8.42% to 34,453,064 domains (includes Wild West Domains, GD’s reseller unit)
- eNom – up 2.6% to 9,039,185.
- Tucows – up 3.3% to 7,432,309
- 1&1 - up 3.9

While those registrars mentioned above are increasing the number of domains they manage, others are losing some control. Network Solutions is down 1.1%, Melbourne IT is down 3.5%, Moniker is down 2.4% and Dotster is down 2.8%.

WHOIS iPhone App from Network Solutions

Domain registration service Network Solutions just released a free WHOIS iPhone app which lets users of the mobile device to query the WHOIS database search tool to find information on the domain or IP including the WHOIS business listing information.

While I’m not an iPhone user it seems like it would be a very practical application for designers, developers and domainers on the go. The app is available now within the iTunes store.

"Network Solutions has been working with the WHOIS database since its inception," said Kamalesh Dwivedi, Network Solutions CIO. "The addition of this mobile capability follows the release of the WHOIS lookup mobile application for Google's Android operating system earlier this year. Extending this capability to the iPhone platform will benefit users in a major way."

"As more and more people begin connecting to the Web via mobile devices, applications like these will be tools needed by any small business owner with a Web presence. The WHOIS application validates domain and contact information and allows users to determine if desired domains are available for purchase. If other business information is listed by the domain holder, this WHOIS business listing will appear as well," Dwivedi added.

Network Solutions Offering .IM Domain Extension

Domain name registration and Web services provider Network Solutions announced the availability of the .IM extension.

The .IM domain extension is currently available from Network Solutions for $15 off the normal domain name registration price the company offers. A one year term for registering a .IM name is $19.99 per year.

"As more and more domains are registered each year, the need for new specialized extensions continues to grow," said Susan Wade of Network Solutions. "The .IM extension allows for a connection between the social aspects of instant messaging and Web presence and can be useful for a number of applications, even beyond personal Web sites."

Network Solutions' LinkTogether For Developers

Developers using Network Solutions' LinkTogether community now have an opportunity to sell their original content including design themes, videos, white papers and more.

Members can now share original content with the community for free or list items for sale. Members that create a seller's account are allowed to list items, assign a price for sale, and track sales. Network Solutions will collect a 15 percent seller's fee.

"Creating a seller's account will allow Web designers and developers to sell and track sales of the files and content they upload," said Warren Smith, director of product management at Network Solutions. "By providing a new avenue for profit, we hope to help Web developers draw additional attention to their work and talents on the already exciting Web community developing at LinkTogether."

Free LinkTogether memberships allow Web developers to list up to two items for sale at any one time. Pro members may sell an unlimited number of uploads. Pro membership is available for $19.99/month. To list items for sale, members must have a valid PayPal® account on file in order to collect payment.

CMS Apps for Small Biz at Network Solutions

Network Solutions has added several content management systems applications to its product suite including WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal, and Mambo.

Network Solutions: One-Click Installs for RoR Apps

The Network Solutions hosting platform now supports Ruby on Rails.

Users of the service will be able to install RoR applications with an auto-installer. Ruby on Rails (RoR) is a popular, open source programming framework that makes developing web based applications quite easy but the process for installing RoR applications in most hosting environments is cumbersome, especially if you don't have a solid understanding of UNIX.

"We heard from the developer community that it's often difficult to integrate Ruby on Rails applications in hosting environments," said Bill Jolly, director of Hosting Product Management for Network Solutions. "Our hosting team saw this as an opportunity to differentiate the Network Solutions hosting platform from the competition by pre-configuring our servers and implementing a quick and easy way to install RoR applications."
