"With Ektron 9 marketers can create websites that adapt to the device a visitor is using," Rogers continued. "Through Ektron 9 persona management, website content becomes more relevant to visitors, increasing engagement and conversions. The new Ektron 9 interface has been enhanced for user productivity. Ektron 9's enterprise search feature delivers a richer search experience for visitors and provides a deeper knowledge of customers.

Ektron, whose solutions are used primarily by mid-market and large enterprises, will also begin working with Rackspace to provide a tiered approach to infrastructure hosting to its customers. The solution will be available at the end of June 2013.

"Enterprises need a trusted advisor who can provide not only an industry-leading infrastructure, but also end-user support services for their Rackspace solutions," said Adrian Lloyd, Director, Alliances & Partners at Ektron, EMEA.

Cloud hosting provider Rackspace has acquired Exceptional Cloud Services in a move to enhance its toolset for developers deploying and managing applications in the open cloud.

Through the deal, Rackspace will expand its developer solutions to include error tracking and Redis-as-a-Service capabilities. Currently, more than 50,000 application developers use these solutions from Exceptional Cloud Services.

“Rackspace is improving the key technologies used by developers in the open cloud. Our focus on the developer community is deeper than ever before and we are carefully adding strategic technologies to our open hybrid cloud portfolio, while keeping the needs of application developers in mind,” said Pat Matthews, senior vice president of corporate development at Rackspace. “Through the acquisition of Exceptional Cloud Services, we’re gaining technology and expertise that will provide startups and cloud developers with the tools that help them deliver more reliable customer experiences and to bring the next generation of cloud-based apps to market faster.”

The acquisition will provide Rackspace with the following products:

Exceptional.io - Exceptional tracks errors in more than 6,000 Web applications. The service not only reports errors in real-time, but also gathers the information developers need to fix errors.

Airbrake.io - Airbrake collects errors generated by other applications and aggregates the results for review.

Redis To Go - Redis To Go helps users manage Redis instances easier, whether it’s one instance or hundreds.

Moreover, the Exceptional Cloud Services acquisition will also assist Rackspace in its recent push into the MongoDB market. This is because the company plans to integrate the Redis To Go solution with the MongoDB database as a service from ObjectRocket. By aligning these two solutions, Rackspace aims to provide developers with a choice of open source-based data platforms that increase the speed and reduce the complexity of building powerful applications on the Rackspace Open Cloud.

"Rackspace has taken another step towards creating a one-stop shop for the growing community of developers that are looking to build complex applications on the open cloud," said Melanie Posey, Research Vice President at IDC. "With today's acquisition of Exceptional Cloud Services, Rackspace gave depth to its application developer toolkit by adding error tracking capabilities, along with a caching solution from Redis To Go, which the company plans to integrate with its recently acquired MongoDB database as a service from ObjectRocket. The tools and depth of expertise that Rackspace gained through its recent acquisitions will collectively work to reduce the complexity associated with building open cloud applications and speed time to market, while helping the company extend its reach to a broader range of global developers.”

Enterprise storage provider Nasuni released results from its latest State of Cloud Storage Report and found that Microsoft Windows Azure (Blob) Storage outperformed last year’s leader, Amazon S3. Surprised?

Nasuni tested the speed (write/read/delete), availability and scalability of the top five public cloud storage providers and found that Microsoft Azure surpassed Amazon in every single category that was examined.

Azure was 56 percent faster in write speed than Amazon, and 39 percent faster at reading files than HP in read speed. The average response time for Azure was 25 percent faster than Amazon S3. With Amazon cloud troubles over the past year, Web developers might ultimately find they’re using more Azure and less S3 in the future.

"Microsoft's investment in its second generation cloud storage, which it made available to customers last year, has clearly paid off," said Andres Rodriguez, CEO of Nasuni. "With Amazon S3 and Microsoft Windows Azure, the cloud storage industry clearly has two strong players to choose from. Even more encouraging, however, was the marked performance improvement across the board. As CSPs continue to mature, competition among top quality providers can only benefit enterprise IT."

The open cloud company Rackspace ranks high among major players like Amazon and Windows in the cloud computing industry, which is an impressive feat. But the company isn’t about to rest on its laurels, as it just announced a slew of new features and enhanced support offerings for its Rackspace Private Cloud Software.

Rackspace just launched Private Cloud Software in August and already thousands of businesses and organizations from more than 125 different countries have downloaded it.

These new additions have been collectively named “Alamo” and incorporate “Folsom,” the latest release of the OpenStack Cloud Software platform that came out in September and included nearly 200 new features. This is the same platform that powers the Rackspace Cloud.

Alamo has allowed Rackspace to extend its service portfolio for the Rackspace Private Cloud, particularly with a new support level – Core Software Support – that includes remote access support for the Private Cloud Software stack all day long and every day of the year. Core Software Support will allow the cloud company’s engineers login to a customer’s private cloud environment to install, configure, patch and troubleshoot, as needed.

Some other new features are highly scalable Block Storage that turns external storage into an additional storage volume and Object Storage powered by OpenStack Swift that allows customers to create “massively scalable” storage resource pools for storing files, with server images taking advantage of commodity hardware to provide reduced costs. It also provides new Monitoring that includes Graphite and Collectd applications to extend monitoring and alerting capabilities. All of these new features were designed to work in private cloud environments.

High performance is, obviously, the ultimate goal of any Web hosting company worth its salt. Perhaps that is why so many notable names in the hosting industry have been turning to Percona, the enterprise-level MySQL support, consulting, training and development services provider.

Basically, Percona works to make MySQL faster and more reliable for its clients, and as of late, it’s being seeing “rapid and increasing adoption” by hosting providers, some of which are pretty huge names, including RackSpace, Blue Host, HP, Joyent, Crucial Web Hosting and SpeedySparrow.

These providers are all making available to their customers the latest release of Percona’s enhanced drop-in replacement for MySQL, known as Percona Server version 5.5.28-29.1. In fact, Percona Server is actually one of the top three most deployed MySQL alternatives around, according to a report from 451 Research.

And it’s no surprise why, as Percona Server offers hosting providers advanced features that can speed up their searches and increase security, as well as giving administrators more control over their server environments. Plus, it’s a free, open source solution that provides breakthrough performance, scalability, features and instrumentation, in addition to self-tuning algorithms and support for high-performance hardware. Not too shabby.

Have you started preparing your website for the holidays? If not, you may be a step behind of your competition.

This is because a new study from cloud hosting company Rackspace reveals that 81 percent of e-commerce decision makers (CIOs, CTOs and IT chiefs) are taking steps to improve the online shopping experience for the 2012 holiday season, such as increasing computing capacity, redesigning websites and addressing security concerns.

In fact, the survey found that one of the biggest challenges that retailers are taking precautions against is website downtime, with 77 percent taking steps to reduce or eliminate this problem during the holiday season. Perhaps the reason this issue is top of mind is because downtime posed a problem for 18 percent of survey respondents last year, with losses ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to tens of millions. Furthermore, 45 percent of the respondents estimate they would lose between $500,000 and $5 million if their company’s site went down for a single day during the holiday season, which could be the reason why 28 percent of respondents are working with their third-party hosting provider to make sure customers can keep shopping online during high-traffic periods.

“Many online retailers have found out the hard way in 2011 that their internal IT systems and resources weren’t ready to handle large spikes in holiday sales,” said Adrianna Bustamante, who works in commerce channel development for Rackspace. “With 45 percent of retailers expecting holiday sales to grow this year, it is important that retailers take steps to improve the online shopping experience and reduce or eliminate downtime during the all-important holiday season.”

Taking steps to improve site performance is very important, especially with the expectation that this year’s holiday sales will be better than last year. Other findings from the study reveal that 29 percent of retailers are preparing for the season by hiring more IT staff, while 37 percent will use load testing, 33 percent will build up website redundancy and 48 percent will increase computing capacity to improve their site’s shopping experience.

These clouds are supported by Rackspace’s open cloud experts.

At present, thousands of different businesses, organizations and individuals across the globe use the Rackspace Private Cloud software, and according to the company, many of their partners have been asking for a way to certify their Private Cloud products, hardware or software through Rackspace. In doing this, it will be able to extend the capabilities of its open cloud solution by providing programs to its partners that can validate their offerings against Rackspace’s solution, making them more attractive to potential customers that also use the Private Cloud.

Because it can be difficult and costly (both in time and monetary investment) to build hardware, apps and platforms that run on Rackspace OpenStack private clouds, as it requires “deep expertise and knowledge,” customers can turn to the Rackspace Private Cloud certification program, which provides a consistent, supportable, tested platform to test products for compatibility with other open private clouds.

To increase versatility, Rackspace is actually offering two different types of product certifications. The first is the Technology Alliance Program that is designed for hardware and platform vendors that offer products and solutions in conjunction with the Rackspace Private Cloud. Partners can include compute, hardware, storage hardware, networking, operating systems and management tools, and they will work with Rackspace engineers to get detailed testing criteria in QA and validation labs to ensure compatibility.

The other type is the “Built For” Program, which was designed for software vendors that want to build applications running in guest virtual machines or to manage app workloads with the Private Cloud. Again, they’ll receive a testing suite and hosted validation environment that confirms their app’s compatibility with the Rackspace Private Cloud.

“Running a large-scale, enterprise private cloud is not an easy task,” says Rackspace’s private cloud vice president, Paul Rad. “Our goal is to help enterprise IT to deploy private clouds that have the efficiently and robustness of Rackspace’s public cloud, which runs thousands of virtual machines. The product certification program opens the door for IT executives to choose a certified stack that has been validated and supported by Rackspace and its certification partners.”

Cloud computing has provided app developers numerous new opportunities for deploying their creations and growing their audience.

AppFog is a multi-language Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) built for the deployment and management of cloud-based applications; basically, it provides a direct avenue for developers to publish their work in the cloud. It is an infrastructure agnostic service that provides solutions for Java, .NET, node.js, Python, PHP, MySQL, MongoDB, Postgres, and Ruby, among others, so it’s got something for almost every type of developer.

A reliable, scalable, and fast platform for both mobile and Web applications, AppFog currently deploys over 60,000 apps in the cloud that are used by tens of thousands of developers across the world.

Recently, the company announced a major partnership with cloud computing aristocracy. AppFog will begin collaborating with Rackspace so that its customers can deploy applications to the open Rackspace Cloud, which is powered by the company’s OpenStack operating system.

The AppFog solution is going to be available through the brand new Rackspace Cloud Tools Marketplace, a comprehensive catalog of third-party applications designed to be used in the Rackspace Cloud.

Now, AppFog customers can develop and deploy their apps to the Rackspace Cloud in a simple, efficient, and cost effective way. They’ll receive 2GB of free RAM when they create an account, and the service will take a pay-for-RAM approach after that.

The key to this partnership is interoperability; current AppFog customers deploying their work on other Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) providers can redeploy the apps to the Rackspace Cloud with zero-code migrations. This provides increased flexibility for AppFog users and helps them avoid vendor lock-in.

Cloud computing management solution RightScale released data showing that 87 percent of its customer cloud usage comes from those using more than one cloud provider and cloud type.

The company believes that this indicates a trend towards using multiple public, private and hybrid clouds to meet IT demands. Translation – you’re using more clouds to satisfy the increasing demands of today’s enterprises.

RightScale offers six fully supported public cloud partners through their platform including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Datapipe, IDC Frontier (IDCF) a subsidiary of Yahoo! Japan, Logicworks, Rackspace and SoftLayer. RightScale also partners with private cloud software providers Citrix Cloudstack, Eucalyptus and Openstack® Cloud.

"The rise of our customers' multi-cloud usage correlates with the sophistication of the deployments they are running in the cloud," said Michael Crandell, CEO of RightScale. "It's amazing to see the performance, resilience and agility our customers are achieving today using the RightScale platform in coordination with our world-class service provider partners spanning ten distinct global geographies."

It’s been written countless times that the cloud is the future of Web tech and will
possibly be the most important investment most businesses make in the near
future – especially enterprise companies.

Of course, there are those with strong (and valid) opinions
on the subject, both in favor of cloud adoption and stringently against it. However,
as the debate ensues, there are many companies in the industry providing great
services to customers of various sizes and requirements.

2011 saw Internet empires and hungry young companies alike
playing a crucial role in the development of cloud technologies and, more
importantly, services. Here are five of the best cloud service providers from
the past 12 months.

Amazon Web Services
Most people just know Amazon as the online retail site, but Web professionals are aware of its
other prominent role on the ‘Net as one of the largest cloud service providers
available.

This may be a somewhat controversial choice seeing as the
service has some highly-noted mishaps this past year, but nonetheless it
remains a leading innovator in the industry, including adding a “white glove”
service for premium customers that will route your calls (and concerns) to the
nearest engineering specialist.

AWS will scale to meet the application demands of its
clients, “whether one server or a large cluster,” offers a pay-as-you-go, low
cost service, instantly deploys applications and allows for full open and
flexible control of all of your data. Despite the blunders of 2011 (of which
customers have understandable concerns), Amazon Web Services continues to be
(one of?) the best cloud provider out there.

Box
Box is probably the busiest provider on this list. It has
been constantly innovating its product over the last year, especially in mobile
applications, and has been able to carve out a significant segment of the
market as a result.

While it may be most popular as a personal consumer service,
Box has accrued and impressive list of businesses and enterprise-level
companies as customers, including Proctor & Gamble, Six Flags, Taylor Made,
Pandora, Clear Channel, the San Francisco Giants and more.

Businesses are helped to a host of features in areas like
content management with desktop syncing and link-based file sharing, mobile
access on Android and iOS devices, online workspaces, a host of administrative
controls and easy integration into existing business software like Google Apps,
Salesforce and NetSuite, as well as offering APIs for custom integrations.

Rackspace
In terms of revenue generated, Rackspace trails only Amazon Web
Services. While that’s not necessarily an indicator of competence, it does
speak highly that so many users are willing to trust it over major brands like
Microsoft and Google.

This year saw less in the way of innovation than most
companies, the soft launch of OpenStack was notable and they released their
impressive Hybrid Hosting option that provides both cloud and managed hosting
in one service. Still, Rackspace has continued to impress with solid service
and security; after all, there are currently over 100,000 companies currently
working with Rackspace.

Rackspace’s on-demand scalable servers come with up to 30 GB
of storage, only require businesses to pay for what they use, are
fully-customizable with root access and are completed by the company’s
“Fanatical Support.”

Dropbox
Many have at least heard of Dropbox, and it has long been
one of the more heavily-utilized cloud service providers available. (For instance,
my own list of Dropbox Alternatives suggests that it has become the standard
for business and personal cloud computing.)

Like Box, Dropbox offers a really impressive mobile service
that is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, iPad, iPhone, Android and
Blackberry devices and still works even when the user is offline. The service
also provides businesses with the ability to utilize the same tools they work
with daily, get started in minutes, put all of their services on a single bill and
manage and migrate accounts. Heck, you even get unlimited version history for
all of your files hosted with Dropbox.

Evernote
If the opinions of tech industry insiders around the globe
are to be trusted, it looks like Evernote may be the next big thing in cloud computing.
What sets this product apart is that it is more of a note-taking and idea-saving service than a traditional cloud storage platform. The idea with
Evernote is that users can save important ideas in “notebooks” and then
retrieve these ideas later, which is made simple thanks to a search function
and the ability to tag things you save.

It also has mobile compatibility, so you can access your ideas
from almost any mobile device, as “Evernote works with nearly every computer, phone
and mobile device out there.” What makes Evernote an especially convenient tool
is that you can take notes everywhere you go and keep all of them in sync and
readily available on any device you may use anywhere.

Ah, the ever-evolving world of cloud computing.

It can be easy to forget that the cloud is still an emerging
technology, mostly because the hype surrounding it already has it pegged as the
future of the Web, but that is also precisely why every advancement in the
industry is a (potentially) big deal.

Hybrid Hosting from Rackspace
Recently, Rackspace, one of the world’s largest cloud
computing companies, unveiled new enhancements to its RackConnect service that
offer “unified integration of the Rackspace Cloud and dedicated hosting in a
hybrid environment.”

This new blending of technologies, which Rackspace refers to
as Hybrid Hosting, will provide customers with the flexibility and quick
scalability of the cloud, but also the security and performance of dedicated
hardware.

For companies, including many enterprise-level businesses,
RackConnect offers an affordable solution that allows them to easily integrate
the cloud into their existing technologies. Thanks to the addition of Hybrid
Hosting, these same customers can now add dedicated hosting from a trusted
provider, striking "the elusive balance” of offering strong performance,
low cost and high security, which reduces (or totally eliminates) trade-offs
that a single platform would likely require.

“We are seeing the market react positively to the availability
of a product that gives customers a hybrid computing solution, which allows
them to use cloud and dedicated computing together more seamlessly,” says
Rackspace’s Chief Technology Officer John Engates. “In fact, many of our more
technically sophisticated customers are using RackConnect as a part of their
computing architecture today.”

Additional Enhancements
In addition to integrating Hybrid Hosting into the
RackConnect solution, the company has also listened to feedback from its
customers and developed three new key enhancements to the product.

RackConnect will now
automatically configure servers that are kept in the cloud to a dedicated
environment, as well as instantly adding load balancers to them.

It also includes bolstered security features that make it
simple for customers to configure network security policies like physical
firewalls or cloud server-based software firewalls without having to go through
managed server technicians. Security can now be automatically applied across an
entire environment.

Finally, there will be many more options for customers to
choose from when using the solution, including cost effective hybrid,
enterprise hybrid, load balancing and VPN cloud bursting services.

Who provides the fastest cloud service? According to CloudSlueth (a Compuware community), the honors go to Microsoft's Azure platform.

CloudSleuth uses the Gomex performance network to determine the reliability and consistency of popular public IaaS (infrastructure as a service) and PaaS (platform as a service) providers. CloudSleuth runs an identical sample ecommerce application on the popular cloud service providers and measures the results over at least six months of historical data.

Microsoft's Azure platform beat out Google App Engine, GoGrid, OpSource, RackSpace, Amazon, TekLinks, BitRefinery, CloudSigma and several others.

The report, available here, shows a significant difference between Azure servers running near Chicago and those running in Singapore.

Hosting and cloud computing industry powerhouse Rackspace
announced the launch of Rackspace Media Services at SXSW today. The
solution provides an open source, direct-to-consumer (D2C) web infrastructure
for music recording labels and other media segments that need to accelerate
content delivery online and scale to fan demand.

Music industry websites are increasingly reliant on e-commerce, are
struggling with facilitating user generated content and the developing social
media and custom applications. The result is that artists are turning outright
to third-party solution providers for distribution, sales and promotion.

“Music recording labels have traditionally focused their resources on
non-differentiating IT tasks or have outsourced their D2C applications to third
parties in an attempt to support hundreds of Artists’ complex sites and
infrastructures. Rackspace gives labels the freedom to focus on differentiating
their businesses via application development and the support of business
processes to meet the needs of both the Artist and the fan,” said Wes Laird,
Director of Rackspace Media Services, Rackspace Hosting.

The specific components of Rackspace Media Services’ include a dedicated implementation
team that delivers a scalable website infrastructure backed by URL uptime
service level agreements, access to LAMP technology professionals, URL
and device monitoring, a structured process to identify and prevent application
performance problems prior to live production allowing for seamless push of code
changes and simplified rollback, and optional server burst architecture for
unplanned traffic spikes.

The findings show that more than half of UK (57%) and US (58%) businesses are unaware of the term.

Perhaps part of the confusion resides in the dual nature of the cloud, meaning both businesses and consumers use the cloud, but do so in different ways. Businesses use the cloud to host applications, and consumers tap the cloud to use those applications.

Most UK businesses (43%) defined cloud hosting as 'remote and multiple servers accessed via the internet.' In the US this was also the most popular answer (29%). Other responses from the UK included 'applications via the internet' (31%), 'virtualisation' (14%) and 'online storage' (8%), with a similar pattern being found in the US. However 27% of UK businesses 'don't know how they would use cloud hosting as part of their IT mix'. A third of US businesses (33%) agreed with this statement.

Lew Moorman, chief strategy officer at Rackspace Hosting, said: "Cloud technology is ideal for the current economic climate, but it is vital that businesses understand how it can best serve their organisation. At Rackspace we want to provide clearer guidelines on how they can get the most out of this technology as a matter of urgency. That is why we are launching a new cloud clinic web site."

Fortunately for those that have yet to grasp the "cloud" and its benefits for businesses and consumers, RackSpace has created a "cloud clinic" to "demystify the cloud".
