Looking to optimize content for the "real-time Web?"

A new study - authored by Bryan Eisenberg, Jay Baer and Pelin Thorogood called “The Impact of Real-Time Content Optimization” – examines the impact of using search engine and social media data during the writing process to create more effective and engaging content. Eightfold Logic, the creator of real-time content optimization service InboundWriter which integrates real-time search and social intelligence directly into the writing process, sponsored the report (available here).

Some of the case study highlights from the report are particularly interesting including the increases in search engine traffic (+27%) and conversions (+17%) on product pages for eBeanStalk.com that were optimized with search data through the InboundWriter service. While still a “sponsored” report, perhaps there is something to the production of timely information for improving audience reach and engagement over its timless counterpart.

"'Speak to the dog, in the language of the dog, about what matters to the heart of a dog' was a metaphor I used in my first book 'Persuasive Online Copywriting' to explain the value of writing using your customers' words and providing relevant content," said Bryan Eisenberg, a best-selling author and expert in improving online conversion rates. "For the first time, we have a direct study that clearly shows the value of leveraging real-time search and social intelligence during the content creation process, as opposed to in separate steps or not at all. InboundWriter enables writers to speak to the hearts of their customers."

Google is launching a real-time data feature in its Analytics offering.

With Google Analytics Real-Time, users will have the ability to see active visitors on the sites they measure, providing very powerful insights into the social media response they are generating. Google's instant statistics, for example, could indicate how well an individual tweet performed in relation to its ability to drive site traffic or conversions. Another suggestion is to use the Real-Time reports to make sure that campaign tracking is correctly implemented.

While the Real-Time reports are not yet currently available to everyone (request early access here), the reports are presently available in the Dashboards tab and will be moving to the Home tab in the new interface release next week.

The response so far from Google Analytics users? Very, very positive.

Twitter announced two rather significant improvements to its platform today – most notably the inclusion of additional countries and cities in Trending Topics and Translations.

Trending Topics provide a glimpse into the most tweeted-about topics on Twitter within a timeline on the sidebar of your Twitter account page. (Deeper history/data on the most popular topics can be seen on the logged out Twitter.com homepage by the way.) For quite some time Twitter has shown the most tweeted about topics near users, but today announced it is expanding its local trends to include 13 new countries and 6 new cities – some of their fastest growing markets, of course.

Twitter also announced they are using Google Translate to display Tweet translations in the details pane to give people more access to what people are tweeting. The feature is currently available to only a small percentage of users but will be rolled out in the coming weeks to everyone.

Google has rolled out an experimental interface (and some real-time tracking features) for its Feedburner service. This is really the first upgrade since the service was acquired back in 2007.

The new interface according to Google provides real time stats for clicks, views, and podcast downloads. Feed publishers are now able to see what content is driving traffic from feed readers, micro-blogging services like Twitter and other syndication sources in real-time.

Those publishers using the FeedBurner Socialize service are also now able to receive stats on how much traffic feed items are receiving, as well as from feed reading platforms like Google Reader directly.

Google did note that subscriber and reach numbers will still be calculated based on a whole day's worth of requests (based on the traffic received for the prior days) but item statistics now reflect the traffic feed publishers are receiving in the moment. That's right - Feedburner has real time stats.
