Is your brand on Tumblr yet? If not, maybe it should be.

A recent comScore report shows that Tumblr's incredible growth during 2011 has given it a strong foothold in the world of social media. It turns out that the microblogging site ranks second among all social networks in terms of user engagement and how much time is spent on site. Only Facebook keeps its users on site longer.

Social media is all about networking and shared interests, which plays directly into the strengths of the Tumblr format. Tumblr promotes and allows for anonymous content-sharing and doesn't require users to divulge any personal information on their profiles.

Tumblr seems to be positioning itself as a very distinct alternative to Facebook, and this could greatly benefit the social network in the future, as evidenced by the fact that its numbers continue to grow at a steady pace.

While brand adoption of the platform has been lukewarm to say the least, it would seem that if users are starting to spend more time on Tumblr than other social networks – most notably Twitter and Google Plus – then we may start seeing more brands establishing their presence on the site.

Wouldn't it be nice to get paid for the conversion that results from your next Facebook or Twitter update?

Performance marketing solution provider Direct Response Technologies announced that it has added a "social media engagement payout model" within its affiliate management platform. The feature will allow both merchants and networks to track and pay affiliates when a referred user interacts with a brand through a social network.

Social activities that can be monetized using the DirectTrack social media engagement feature include Facebook "like," Google "+1," and Twitter "follow." In addition to broadening affiliates' earning potential, the feature can increase merchants' abilities to remarket to social followers and expand brand exposure.

"Five years ago, few companies dedicated a line item to social media within the marketing budget, but today most understand the value of the medium," said George Bordo, general manager, Direct Response Technologies. "DirectTrack's social media engagement capabilities incent affiliates to drive visitors to social media sites and give advertisers the data they need to measure and optimize the success of their social media investment."

These social media payouts are part of the company's commission configuration suite which supports the recruitment of affiliates as well as influences motivation and perhaps even performance.
