That may change as popular video platforms like Vimeo are now enabling video creators to sell their work, in whatever way they want.

Last November Vimeo started releasing features for video creators to monetize their work. It's Tip Jar offernig enabled fans and video viewers to send small cash payments to producers/creators. Vimeo then followed that up by introducing a pay-to-view experience on the platform. Now however, Vimeo kicked it up a few notches with its Video On Demand program, an open platform that enables producers to sell their work directly to their own audience and on their own terms.

Vimeo Pro users will receive a 90/10 revenue split, provide their audience with a cross-platform (mobile, tablet and connected TV) experience. Vimeo users are also able to set the price, determine how long the work will be available after purchase, and even limit it to available regions.

Audience members can start tipping their favorite Vimeo videos, thanks to a new suite of creator tools from the video-sharing site.

The company recently launched the Vimeo Creator Services platform to help content creators make more money from their videos. Currently, the suite of tools only includes a feature called Tip Jar, with plans to launch a Pay-To-View service in the future.

Tip Jar is a pretty neat feature because it allows Vimeo Plus or Vimeo PRO members to collect money from their fans. Once Tip Jar is activated on a video, viewers will see a “Tip this video” button below the player. Then, viewers can enter a tip amount (from $1 - $500) and their credit card information, and video producers reap the benefits.

Additionally, Vimeo plans to introduce its first pay-to-view service in the coming months, according to the company’s blog. This service will give tools to video creators that will enable them to charge for access to their videos – with no coding required. The company's blog post also states that more tools will be coming to the Vimeo Creator Service suite soon.

Check out an example of Tip Jar on the 2012 Vimeo Festival + Awards' Grand Prize winning video below:

alternative Vimeo is looking to attract more video creators to its platform with the
addition of some new features – a cloud-based enhancement tool and new soundtrack
options.

The Enhancer will allow video publishers to make changes
to their content without having to edit them on a desktop and then re-upload
them onto the site. In other words, creators can edit from Vimeo’s website,
which includes being able to instantly add music to their videos, update audio
levels and control a song’s starting and ending point.

Through a collaboration with music partner SmartSound, Vimeo
has also added almost 4,000 new soundtrack options on top of the 50,000 titles
that were already available through its soundtrack tool. These new options are supposed to make way for improved flexibility.

At the price of $1.99 per song for a personal license,
or $19.99 for a commercial license, users will be able to create custom
soundtracks for their videos using SmartSound songs. For greater customization, users will be
able to control the length, arrangement and instrument mix of the tracks.

Back in August, Pinterest rolled out YouTube support to allow users to pin and share videos from the site on the pinboard-based social network. Still, despite that addition, the focus of Pinterest (and reason for its growth) has remained pretty consistently rooted in photos.

However, as the site continues to grow in
popularity, the company probably realized that it will have to broaden its
horizons to hold the interest of new and old users, alike. Thus, Pinterest
announced integration with Vimeo, which, like its YouTube deal, will allow
users to pin Vimeo videos on the site.

Some are speculating that this move is just what Pinterest needs to expand its content reach, since Vimeo’s fanbase tends to be more
art and design focused than YouTube’s things-on-cats loving crowd. This means these younger, hipper users may be more interested in sharing viral content on the site, so this new deal could help spur video usage on the social network. Or that's the theory, at least.

If nothing else, it’s clear that Pinterest is interested in evolving beyond its current format.

Vimeo, long playing second fiddle to YouTube, has released some new features that should be very attractive to video producers.

First, Plus members ($59.95 per year or $9.95 per month) can now upload files as large as 5 GB - meaning full-feature HD film uploads, or up to 2.5 hours of HD per week. With a Plus membership, Vimeo users can also upload unlimited HD videos per week, within the weekly limit (non-Plus members are limited to one new HD video per week).

Also when it comes to HD videos, Plus members can automatically embed the HD version of their videos so that users need not choose the HD viewing option. However, be careful with this option, particularly when embedding video outside of your own site, where page elements out of your control can slow load times.

An attractive option for marketers and brand curators, Vimeo now offers custom URLs for videos. This is great for branding and recall purposes (and very useful for tweeting and Facebook updates) but will not influence SEO, as the root URL will continue to be a numbered sequence. The Vimeo blog states, however, that this is only a redirect "for now."

Finally, Vimeo now allows users to hide their activity on their profile page. This feature has been requested often from Vimeo users as a way to increase privacy.
