That changed last week the release of an in-app ad tracking solution from WhatRunsWhere.

The platform's in-app capability now provides advertisers the ability to collect data from more than 20,000 Android apps, data which provides intelligence about where competitors ads are running, which ads are running there, who is selling those ads and other information that could proves useful in managing mobile ad campaigns.

“This is a significant development, not only for WhatRunsWhere, but the entire Android app market,” said Max Teitelbaum, co-founder and COO of WhatRunsWhere. “Until now, apps have been an informational black hole for marketers seeking to implement effective campaigns. Advertisers and agencies were buying ads blind, with no real performance history data showing what types of ads had worked in what apps. Now, with the introduction of WhatRunsWhere’s in-app tool, advertisers can develop intelligent strategies for deploying their mobile ad dollars, leading to a greater return on investment.”

“The universe of Android-based devices continues to grow at an astounding rate,” Teitelbaum added. “The ability to effectively reach audiences across Android phones, tablets and other devices represents an enormous opportunity for advertisers.”

Well, it seems I wasn't the only one that saw some value in the service.

WhatRunsWhere has apparently partnered with RedBooks, a provider of information on advertiser and agency relationships, key personnel and billing information. Through the arrangement, RedBooks and WhatRunsWhere will share data - and it could turn out to be a very valuable relationship for users of both services.

Users of the WhatRunsWhere platform researching an advertiser will receive a description of the brand from from Red Books, along with contact information, revenue and names of marketing or sales executives. When Red Books users look up an advertiser, they will see the brand’s current online display and text ads via WhatRunsWhere.

Well, you can - and you’ve been able to for quite some time. As of this week though it’s become less expensive and for those with a limited market research budget, that should come as welcome news.

Competitive intelligence service WhatRunsWhere this week released Ad Vantage, a stand-alone service for tracking display ads running exclusively on the Google Display Network. While Facebook remains in some respect the king of display, Google is expected to pass them as early as this year. Why is that important? A scaled down version of the WhatRunsWhere service can still prove to be incredibly useful.

“Many of our smaller customers place ads only on the Google Display Network, so they didn’t need the more robust capabilities of the complete WhatRunsWhere solution, which includes competitive intelligence of banner and text ad campaigns across the entire web and mobile universe,” said Mike Cojanu, chief executive officer of WhatRunsWhere. According to Cojanu, Ad Vantage was developed “to zero in on their (small advertisers) needs while reducing their costs.”

WhatRunsWhere’s more robust offering provides insights on over 40 networks, but this version (which focuses exclusively on the Google Display Network) will definitely be appealing to many – particularly if you’re on a limited market research budget or just want to get a general idea of what your competitors are up to in terms of their display efforts. The Ad Vantage service is currently offered at a price of $20/mo or $200 annually.

It’s no secret that mobile is one of the hottest topics in tech right now. Not only are businesses focused on providing their consumers with mobile optimized websites and applications, but marketers are also putting more dollars into this emerging channel.

However, in order to get the most out of your marketing dollars, it is important to monitor your competitor’s advertising strategy – especially in a rising channel like mobile. This is where WhatRunsWhere’s services come in handy.

WhatRunsWhere is a year-old service that enables ad agencies and advertisers to track competitors’ online ad campaigns, and now the company is offering the same capabilities in the mobile market following the acquisition of UK-based startup Mobile Ad Spy.

According to WhatRunsWhere’s Chief Operating Officer Max Teitelbaum, Mobile Ad Spy’s technology will be merged into the WhatRunsWhere platform. Additionally, media buyers who have been beta testing Mobile Ad Spy since May are invited to continue their use of the marketing intelligence tool as it launches under the WhatRunsWhere brand.

“Anyone involved in online marketing can now see where their competitors’ ads are running on smartphones, tablets and other mobile media – and pinpoint exactly which individual ads are running on which apps, mobile sites and mobile ad networks,” says Teitelbaum. “Just as our clients have been doing with banner and text ad campaigns for the past year, WhatRunsWhere users – via the highly compatible Mobile Ad Spy technology – can now dissect competitors’ mobile advertising, resulting in reduced risk and higher ROI for their own campaigns.”
