The Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN) notified its publishers that the program will cease to operate starting April 30, 2010. The program seemed to be in full swing back in 2007 but has since fallen out of sight - perhaps thanks to the introduction of the APT platform.

In the email notification to publishers, Yahoo! suggested using advertising network Chitika, a well respected contextual network which happens to syndicates Yahoo! Content Match and Sponsored Search ads. Chitika has set up a special process for YPNO beta publishers to participate in its platform.

Should you still be using YPN, expect the final payments for the month ending April 30, 2010 to publishers no later than May 31, 2010. All publishers eligible for 1099s for the 2010 tax year will have those mailed by January 31, 2011.

They have just announced that a previous 3 percent fee to optimize ads has been dropped.

Some of the networks included are Google AdSense, Yahoo! Publisher Network, Tribal Fusion and Blue Lithium. YieldBuild also recently partnered with Microsoft pubCenter. After signing up, publishers choose the sections of their site where they would like to display ads. YieldBuild then provides one snippet of code to install and starts delivering ads. The ads are then tracked and monitored (publishers also get a suite of analytics tools), and the best performing ads are delivered to users. Some of the ways ads are optimized include color, size, format and positioning. And even though the system uses a mix of ad networks, publishers can still monitor ad performance through their existing accounts with those systems, and they still get paid through their current provider.

For the busy Web professional it's not a bad way to see if you could be getting more from your current ad space.

service is now officially up and running. Website Magazine tried out the service
a few months back and by all accounts it worked pretty well in terms of creating
ad-enabled PDF's, managing them and yes, of course, monetizing existing content.
Ads are displayed in a panel adjacent to content. See an example here - warning
- you must have Adobe Reader 8, otherwise the ads will not be displayed.
Problem? Yes, but that's just the beginning.

The problem with the program is not that the ads are not relevant (they most
definitely are) or that the potential payout is not high enough to offset the
cost of integrating PDF's into your existing content. The problem is that most
people (and since we've tried this on our own site I'm speaking from first
hand experience) is that few people choose to download content in a PDF -
for many it's just simpler to print out an article or read it online. If no one
is downloading the PDF content, fewer people will see and click on the ads, The
other downside is that as a publisher of content, I want people to read the
content, to act on the information, even share it with others. They can't do
that at the rate I want them to if they are constantly being presented with
advertising - regardless of how seamless and non-obtrusive it appears to them.

If you have not been dissuaded from using the program, you can
sign up here. For more
information, check out the

Adobe Ads for PDF program, which features advertising in content PDF's from the
Yahoo Publisher Network. We've finally got around to implementing the solution on
various sections of the WebsiteMagazine.com site (just the November issue) and
wanted to give readers a heads up on how they look.

In my opinion the ads are attractive and unobtrusive (Adobe Reader 8 is required) and the targeting from Yahoo is actually very strong.
Creating the PDFs was also incredibly quick and easy - all around a great
solution which should attract a lot of attention once it goes public. Check the Adobe Ads enabled PDF for yourself by selecting one of the stories
on the WM home page or the article on Graphics Optimization below and let
us know what you think:
