With all the hustle and bustle around the recently holiday shopping season, you likely missed one of the most important tech news stories of 2013 - digital payment powerhouse PayPal acquired Stackmob, a mobile backend-as-a-service (BaaS).
The Stackmob service makes it easy to connect mobile application functions to cloud services - from push notification services in the cloud, to analytics and support systems - so developers can create solutions that span online, mobile and in-store experiences (particularly payment solutions). StackMob was/is certainly not the only mobile BaaS in the sector - Kinvey and Parse (which was acquired by Facebook in 2013) were also interesting startups to watch in 2013 and remain viable solutions.
"StackMob is best known for its outstanding work in developing a platform that lets developers and companies easily create and manage mobile applications. We are thrilled to have the StackMob team put those same skills and expertise toward enhancing PayPal’s technology stack," wrote PayPal CTO James Barrese.
