WordPress has long been a target of hackers but that may soon change as Automattic - the company behind the popular open source software project - announced this week that it has acquired BruteProtect, a security and management tool for WordPress.

The BruteProtect plugin - which is currently used on more than 100,000 websites - protects sites from malicious logins and keeps sites updated with the software's most recent versions of the core, plugins, and themes.

Automattic indicated that while the plugin and service are still currently available, the company will make the product and service free, and ultimately build the functionality into Jetpack (a collection of plugins) and retire BruteProtect as a standalone product altogether.
