Microsoft has launched new features for its personal assistant Cortana in an effort to help users better manage their busy schedules.
For starters, Cortana will automatically recognize when people make commitments to one another in email messages. By doing this, the technology will begin reminding users about their commitments to help them better manage their schedules.
“People often make promises to do things in email but may forget about them as the days go by and emails pile up,” Microsoft said in a blog post. “Microsoft Research (MSR) was pursuing an intriguing and powerful idea around this challenge—automatically recognizing when people make commitments to one another in email messages and providing reminders. We collaborated very closely with MSR to bring this new ability to Cortana to help people better keep track of their commitments.”
In addition, Cortana is also helping users manage their calendars. According to Microsoft, Cortana is able to understand how its users like to work, including the hours they like to set meetings and the hours they are most productive. This intelligence enables Cortana to alert users when they have a meeting outside of a regular time so they can take action quickly and move the meeting to a better time. What’s more, Cortana will begin alerting users about last-minute meetings so they can adjust their schedules accordingly.
It is important to note that Microsoft says that it is just scratching the surface of how Cortana can help people be more productive, and the company plans to add more features and scenarios to the technology in the future.
