Yahoo extended its deadline for nominating board members today, in a last-ditch effort to avoid a hostile takeover by Microsoft. Time Warner, News Corp and Google are all being courted by Yahoo to help save the struggling company.
AT&T will spend one billion dollars in 2008 to expand its IP networks for large businesses – driven by an explosive surge in data, voice and video traffic. That’s more than double its investment in 2006.
Microsoft unveiled Internet Explorer 8 today, inviting everyone to download and install the preview of the updated browser. One of the new features is Activities – pre-designed mashups provided free of charge.
Finally, Ask.com has given up on competing with Google and will now focus on marketing to married women. It’s a throwback to the Ask Jeeves days and will result in a layoff of about 8 percent of their workforce.

The boycott of eBay by seller concludes today, cappinga week of bitterness after the online-action site raised fees and changed its feedback policy. Auction listings on eBay.com dropped some 13% since the strike started February 18th to about 12 million items, according to third-party tracking sites such as dealscart.com
Adobe Systems today announced the availability of Adobe AIR and Adobe Flex 3 pftware, furthering its technoloy platform for tich Internet applications. Developers and designers will use Adobe RIA technologies to rapidly create and deploy rich, branded content and applications for free.

eMarketer is predicting that online retailer in the US will ring up over 100 billion more in sales in 2012 than they did in 2007. Sales growth will come mainly from consumers who are shifting their spending for traditional retail stores to the Internet.

Microsoft will not raise its bid for Yahoo as it seeks to gain control of the
flailing Internet company. Instead, Microsoft will proceed with a proxy fight
against Yahoo. Unless Yahoo enters into merger talks, Microsoft will seek to
nominate a slate of directors to Yahoo's board by March 13th.
Vivendi said Tuesday it expects its new Internet music, ringtone and video games
provider Zaoza to attract 500,000 subscribers by the end of the year. The
commercial portal launching Wednesday offers a selected list of exclusive
content for mobile phones and computers for 3 euros (or about 4 and 1/2 dollars)
a month.
The world's top PC vendor, Hewlett-Packard, beat competitors Dell, Lenovo, and
Apple to provide the best online customer support, according to a survey
released on Tuesday by The Customer Respect Group. HP was also rated as
providing the best online customer service among a sample of 18 technology
companies.

U.S. consumers clicked mostly on Web sites that gave them information on taxes, politics, real estate and job hunting tips in January according to ComScore Media Metrix. Comscore released its monthly analysis of consumer activity at the top online sites Monday.
A new IDC study of consumer online behavior found that the Internet is the medium on which online users spend the most time (32.7 hours/week). This is equivalent to almost half of the total time spent each week using all media (70.6 hours).

Citysearch announced that it will provide its local content for distribution across AOL properties. AOL will in turn integrate local advertising and content from Citysearch’s local advertisers into AOL’s local properties, offering access to more than 57 million unique users per month.
Amazon is fighting Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to require out-of-state online companies to collect New York state sales tax on goods they send to the cash strapped state. Spitzer estimates that New York would gain $47 million with such a tax.

Web browsing and searching are becoming increasingly risky activities according to a report published by Google. Security engineers at Google found that more than 1% of all search results contained at least on result that pointed to malicious content and the trend seems to be increasing.
Comcast Corp. told the Federal Communications Commission in formal comments Tuesday that hampering some file-sharing by its subscribers was a justifiable way to keep Web traffic flowing for everyone.
Undeterred by the threat of a hostile takeover, slumping Internet pioneer Yahoo Inc. Yahoo Inc said it has bought Maven Networks Inc, a provider of online video technology, for about $160 million to expand its ability to sell advertising alongside Web clips.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau will unveil its best practice guidelines for lead generation this week. Lead generation has come under fire from the Federal trade commission as some publishers are failing to disclose terms and costs associated with their promotions.
On a discouraging note, the digital divide between rich and poor countries is growing. Developing countries are far behind the use of broadband internet with just three percent penetration while developed countries expect to reach 28 percent in 2007. This comes from a report issued Wednesday by the UN Conference on Trade and Development.
