A new site caught my attention this afternoon, LiveNewsCameras.com. Being called a "pilot program," LiveNewsCameras (owned by Fox Television Stations) provides access to live news feeds from several participating outlets around the country. The feeds are displayed as thumbnail images that update every few minutes. When you click on the thumbnail, the larger center area of the screen streams that news feed/camera live. This afternoon, a feed from MyFoxCleveland was airing Barack OBama delivering a speech, Tampa Bay aired a press conference from admitted HGH user and New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte and Los Angeles showed preparations for this year's Academy Awards. If a particular news feed is not active, you may see a traffic camera, weather radar images or simply an organization's logo.

At the top right of the page is a moderator, discussing what's happening with the various feeds from around the country and answering emails from viewers. Below the moderator are text boxes explaining what is being aired around the country. The moderator is also available to embed on your website as well as MySpace and other social networking outlets (see below).

Based in Chicago, LiveNewsCameras debuted about two weeks ago and is currenlty looking for feedback from viewers while testing the viability of the pilot program. Some other city feeds included are Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, New York and Washington D.C. A couple of other interesting feeds are CSPAN and NASA - today mission control is preparing for the return of the Space Shuttle on Wednesday. Expect many more feeds to be included in the near future (it seems a couple have been added already this afternoon) and other site updates. There is a tab for World News, but that is currently still in development - LiveNewsCameras needs cooperation from those outlets to air their programs.

Overall, it's a very interesting concept. As these feeds are streaming - even before the feed is live to the general television audience - it will be interesting to see how media outlets, newscasters and the general public reacts. For example, before Andy Pettitte was "officially" on air, he could be seen laughing and joking around, clearly not aware that anyone was watching him. As he was addressing serious topics and his subsequent speech expressed remorse and regret, he likely would not be happy about being seen joking with people. The audio is not available until the stream is official, so at least that part is covered.
