Dot Org Hits 10 Million Domain Milestone

While most domainers are laser-focused on the potential in the new generic top-level domains, don’t rule out acquiring a tried-and-true extension like .ORG.

Public Interest Registry, the operator of the .ORG domain, this month announced a major milestone – the registration of its 10 millionth .org domain. The domain that registered the historic mark was JADForum.org – an organization dedicated to advanced the sustainable and regional development of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea Basin shared by Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.

While the state of .org and more established domain extensions is in a state of flux thank in part to the upcoming introduction of new gTLDs, .ORG is still seen by many as the most trustworthy, reliable and secure extension for their cause. That may be one of the reasons that .ORG has maintained growth between 9 and 10 percent annually over the past three years.

“For more than 25 years, .ORG has enabled registrants to engage and empower their communities both online and off,” said Brian Cute, CEO of Public Interest Registry. “Reaching 10 million domain registrations is a significant achievement and highlights PIR’s commitment to providing a trusted place online for organizations, companies, and individuals to tell their stories and mobilize their communities. As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to continued growth and to giving more causes around the world a trusted, online venue with .ORG.”
